Much more so, he played box to box for Gremio. It's well known that Rafa deliberately had him playing in a sitting / DM role for his first year to bed him in to our way of playing and the league in general. Apparently this year, Rafa is going to give him more opportunity to be the DM that gets forward, so hopefully we'll see more of what made him the player he was at Gremio.

I reckon that's a really good point actually. If I have some-one starting a new job in my office I break them in gently by making them prove to me that they can get the simple things right before I let them loose on more complicated things where getting it wrong can be a major problem. Why should football be any different really? It fits in well with the oft quoted notion as well that Rafa sees players as 'tools' rather than 'humans'. He might be the complete player but I think Rafa wants to see his players, especially the juniors, prove it bit by bit.

Of course, some players are just complete tools.

I don't think we are. I think we're looking at how average he is when he plays. Just don't think he suits our formation and way of playing. Feel a bit sorry for the guy to be honest

On reading this thread, it's amazing how opinions vary so greatly. Football is so fascinating.

For me Lucas is a player who would get used infrequently. He would never displace Xabi or Masch, but would allow them some respite during an arduous campaign.
