How i wish we still had someone like this

Absolute legend. Look at the incisive passing, the movement off the ball, the numbers with which we attack, the speed with which we move the ball and get it forward. All so effortless and easy...

That goal against Everton in the cup was just a miracle goal. And such was the genius of John Barnes, he scored the same goal against Villa too. Unbelievable.

What would a Barnes of his hey-day be worth in today's market? You can keep your Cristiano ****ing Ronaldo.

And check out those free kicks - he repeats the same ****ing freekick too! Once against Palace and then again against Spurs (i think it is). Staggering, he scores the same incredible goal more than once, almost at will.

I sincerely watch that in genuine awe.

What a player, criminally underrated IMO.

We would walk this league if we had him in our current side. Makes Ronaldo look disinctly second rate. Johnny Barnes..

I know people will mention Souness, Gerrard, Dalglish and Hughes, but Barnes must also be right up there in the list of our best ever players. He'd be in the top 5 for me, without doubt.

Completely worshipped the bloke. I was 10 when we signed him.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

As someone who was brought up on the team of the late 80's and just missed out on the era of Souness, Dalglish, and the first coming of Rush etc, Barnes circa 1987-1991 is the best player I have seen in a Liverpool shirt. He had everything: he was quick, strong, powerful, technically excellent, great ball control, could dribble and would take players on beating them with both pace and skill, he was excellent hitting the dead ball and a great crosser.

Martin Jol spoke about Dirk Kuyt being a 20-20 striker, ie he'd get you 20 goals and 20 assists a season, well John Barnes was the original 20-20 player. One of our greatest ever players, and if we had someone like him, particularly on our right wing, we'd be devestating. He was brilliant.

Spot on mate. I feel lucky to have been old enough to watch that team. Even allowing for your Arsenal 'invincibles' who went unbeaten, the Milan team of that era under Sacchi and any other side i've seen, our team from that mid-late 80s era was the best ever for me.

Barnes and Beardsley ran riot, Rush and Aldo (intermittently) scoring the goals, McMahon in the middle of midfield, Houghton chipping in, Hansen keeping it tight at the back and Brucie adding his own brand of madness.

Imagine if that side had been able to play in europe. We'd be on about 10 european cups by now.

Yep. No offence to Dirk, but Jol's description there is something of an insult to Barnes. He virtually invented the concept of the '20-20' player. Just sublime, it really was men against boys.

Some younger reds might watch that and think "Yeah, you can make anyone look good on a youtube compilation" but believe it or not, Barnes did things like that virtually every week. Staggering.

Yep, I agree with you. Dirk is a good player and a great lad, his tireless work which benefits others really is commendable, but referring to him as a 20-20 player does not do Barnes justice. Barnes was literally a "20-20" player. I can give him no greater praise than to say he is the best Liverpool player I have ever seen. Like you say, one of our top 5 greatest ever players, without a doubt.

Shame that injuries did for him when Souness came in.

That team (1987-90) must be one of the finest teams that has ever played, and Barnes was a crucial part of it. Shameful that I, amongst so many others, took it almost for granted, given what went before. If only I'd known what was coming after!

Remember when we signed those two?

Beardsley for £1.9m and Barnes for £900k i think it was.

I've always maintained that the 1988 title winning team is the best club team in English football history. Should have won the Double (was a travesty the ref disallowed Beardsley's goal in the Cup Final v Wimbledon and brought it back for a free kick in our favour, and then Aldo's pen miss), and would have conquered Europe too no doubt. Played better football than the much lauded Arsenal under Wenger. Better than Brazil.

I was at the game at Highbury when we first signed them in our grey candy strip. We won 1-2.I think Also scored and Beardsley scored the other right in front of me in the clock end.It was standing then and behind the goals were advertising hoardings which all the kids used to sit behind on a low wall. One of the first games I remember going to.

King Kenny,Steven Gerrard and John Barnes are my favorite all time players and i couldn't put them in any particular order of preference.
