Played better football than the much lauded Arsenal under Wenger. Better than Brazil.

The 5-0 mauling of Nottingham Forrest is often refered to as the most perfect team performance ever.

Absolutely magnificent performance. It's worth remembering that Forrest were a direct title rival at the time as well.

Fabulous player in a fabulous team. The greatest team we've ever had.

He's the only person who has left me star struck, bumped into him on Bond St and I was completely tongue tied. He just smiled.

My favourite ever player, of any team or nation.

Aye....Tom Finney was in the crowd that night and called it the finest performance he'd ever seen.

Some of the passing in those clips was so crisp, it looked like someone playing FIFA/PES. Incredible really.

                My favorite player.

To be fair to the rest I missed out on most of their hey days.

My first memories are when King Kenny was player manager. Still a great player, but not as great as he had been.

                But Barnes...

Even this couldn't diminish my respect for him:

In fact I remember thinking when Babel signed. He's black, he plays as a winger, he raps, let's hope the similiarities don't stop there. Alas they did.

Whilst the '88 team played arguably the most attractive football I've seen from a Liverpool side, if I was forced to judge I'd say that the '79 championship-winning team just had the edge. 16 goals conceded in 42 games. The finest midfield quartet ever to perform in this country. And the incomparable Dalglish at his creative and inspirational peak.

If the '88 team had a weakness, and it's possibly easier to highlight in retrospect, it was, on the rarest of occasions, susceptible to being bullied out of its stride. The Wimbledon final is probably the most obvious example, but I also saw it happen at home to United, with the carthorse Whiteside being brought on solely to kick us off the park, allowing them to pull back a 3-1 deficit. No team has yet been born that would have had a prayer of intimidating the '79 line-up.

We're talking small degrees here, but for me, having seen them both perform, the defensive organisation, the unmatched genius of Dalglish and the leadership and artistry of Souness give the 1979 team the advantage.

No arguments about the standing of Barnes though. For 3 seasons he was consistently spellbinding. His home debut, v Oxford, remains the greatest I've seen to this day, settting up Aldridge to tap in from a couple of yards after tearing their right side to tiny pieces, before curling a free-kick into the top corner - all before half time, as well. For our last title win, in 1990, we were probably more reliant on Barnes than we'd ever been on one player before over the course of a season (with the possible exception of Rush's influence on the 1984 title win).

It's just a shame that injuries deprived Barnes of his pace and power whilst still relatively young. If he'd have maintained the same standard for a few more years, it's fair to say that he'd have been pushing Kenny close for 'Greatest Ever' status.

Absolute legend. Look at the incisive passing, the movement off the ball, the numbers with which we attack, the speed with which we move the ball and get it forward. All so effortless and easy...

If he was on our left now, we'd be walking the league.

I agree it was the best performance I have seen ,Considering Forest were our title rivals and it should have been more than 5-0 what a great team, but It got me thinking how many of our current squad would have got in that team?
poissibly Gerrard and Torres and maybe carra and a few others just to make up the squard but who would they have replaced?

Brucie was good but would Pepe be better ? Would Torres replace Aldo ? would Gerrard replace Beardsly? and would Lucus replace mcmahon

                      whats your thoughts?

always remember watching him from the KOP - as soon as he was comming down the left you be trying to get a good view of the player in the box so you could see the shot on goal. You just knew he'd skin the player and cross a good ball.

                        2 reason's why i couldn't give 2 sh*ts re england team
1 - the abuse he got
2- getting injured whilst on duty with them

Brilliant player to watch and must push Kenny close to being the best player we've had.
Kenny, Souness and Barnes are the my 3 all time favorite players

What a great player, I unfortunately can only remember some of the years he played for us.

Great balance and control, but as the commentator says at one point, what really sets him apart is his delivery of the ball. Inch perfect so many times!

Not sure about the others but dare I say Reina is better than Brucie was, IMO. There are similarities - both like(d) to come charging out of their area to get involved, but for me Pepe is a more complete goalkeeper. Don't want to do Brucie a disservice though, as he was fantastic. Forget the clown jibes, he was great.

Barnes was the best player I've seen in a Liverpool shirt - I'm too young to have seen Kenny when he was playing regularly. But I always feel Barnes was really under-rated
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
