Torres: We don't need another striker

    Video: http://www.setanta.com//uk/Articles/...ta/gnid-47526/

Fernando Torres has exclusively told Setanta he feels that Liverpool do not need to sign another striker in the summer - despite selling Robbie Keane back to Tottenham during the last transfer window.

The Spain striker continues to impress alongside Steven Gerrard, when the Reds skipper is played in a more advanced role, and sees no reason to upset the partnership.

With Liverpool still chasing the title after Yossi Benayoun's dramatic late winner at Fulham and the massive Champions League tie with Chelsea coming up next, Torres is thriving on the pressure.

"People are talking about maybe we need another striker - a second striker, but Stevie can score more goals than any other striker," Torres told Setanta.

"He's our most important player and our captain. If Stevie can play behind the striker, we don't need another striker."

The former Atletico Madrid marksman admits he feels like an Englishman because he is so ingrained in Liverpool life.

"I think I can play better and I can improve," he asserted. "I feel like I'm at home, like an English player because I am feeling fantastic in the city and in the club.

"I hope to play a lot more years here in Liverpool and keep scoring goals.

"The pressure means we have to try to stay 100 percent in the big games but I don't feel the pressure.

"I'm enjoying it. I think the best things are coming."

Torres hopes the 4-1 win at Manchester United will still be a turning point in the season's championship race.

"It was a fantastic week for Liverpool fans," he recalled. "I think Liverpool were better than Manchester United, we played with more intensity and more quality. We scored four goals, they scored one.

"After the game, the title race started again. If Man U had won that game, it'd have been impossible for us. Now we are in the race again and in a fantastic position to try and beat Man U.

"You keep training and keep playing to make things better. Now, we are in a good position. It's true Middlesbrough away and some games at home, we've had a lot of draws at home, were a problem for us.

"But we're back now and have to keep playing well and keep winning."

That's all well and good Nando, me little beaut, but what happens when you get injured?

We definitely need an established striker who can play up on his own and score goals at PL level.

"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

Why do Irish fans keep trying to foist Irish strikers on us?

Have you learned nothing from the Keane debacle?

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I'd still take Zaki. With good players around him, i think he'd score plenty. Got all the physical attributes.

doyle from the bench or when torres is out injured would be decent imo.

I think what Nando was eluding to was that we do not need another striker as first choice to play alongside him. He is quite right in saying that the role of second striker for Stevie is ideal and should not be altered as it was when Keane popped in for 5 minutes.

                      Maybe you are!

I haven't seen enough of Kevin Doyle to judge whether or not he's worth a place on the bench at a top 4 club.

I mean a top 4 Premiership club of course.

Seriously, the fact is he's been playing this season in a division of a far lower standard and that's not a recommendation.

As a back-up striker we could do no worse than Diego Milito - very experienced as well.

And being Argentinian, Rafa would love him.

I kind of agree, he is decent, but i think we should be moving away from the decent type back up and looking for the very good type back up striker. Would be too big of a punt at the moment for a top four.
Im sure he will be playing in the prem next season, lets see how he progresses then. but he will make a very good striker imho.

Nah, obviously that's an issue Which is why i said 'physical' attributes - but maybe if he's at a top club, he'd have more motivation. Rafa could sort him out.
