Fox Host Says Advertiser Boycott Over Remarks About Soccer Fan Deaths Has Hurt His Show

    By Jim Edwards | June 5th, 2009 @ 9:48 am

Fox Soccer Channel host Steve Cohen says he has been “hurt” financially by an advertiser boycott of his Sirius satellite radio show, and has created a fundraising web page to support his business. Separately, Cohen’s business filing status with California appears to be suspended, according to a state web site.

The boycott was called for by American fans of Liverpool F.C. who are infuriated at a series of comments Cohen made on his show about the death of 96 fans in a stadium crush 20 years ago. In those comments, Cohen called Liverpool fans “murderers,” “disgraceful” and “vile,” and has compared them to Nazis, terrorists and the Taliban.

BNET published a story explaining why the Hillsborough Stadium disaster of 1989 is affecting advertisers on Fox and Sirius’s World Soccer Daily on May 15.

Cohen’s online “begging bowl” has so far raised just $4,670, at the time of writing. Cohen’s appeal says:

… a small group of people who disagree with some of the opinions stated by WSD hosts have decided to launch a smear campaign against the sponsors and public in order to get the show shut down. … A donation to WSD goes directly to keeping WSD on the air …

It also claims a percentage of the donations will go to the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, a group that supports the families of the victims. The campaign, however, has said it will not take Cohen’s money, according to Prost Amerika Soccer blog.

Prost quoted Cohen saying on his show:

I don’t think it would be possible to sit here and say we haven’t been hurt by this. We have been. There’s no question about it. We have been. Revenue has dropped. In the traditional fashion of NPR, there’s a button on our website now that says support World Soccer Daily, where you can now go and help support this show while we go through this reasonably difficult time…

Prost also noted that Cohen’s original text on his fundraising page merely inflamed the controversy further:

This is the United States and if these people were operating out of the Middle East we would call them terrorists … lets show them that we are not effected or intimidated by a bunch of thugs who are behaving like the Taliban.

The controversy between Cohen and Liverpool fans stems from Cohen’s opinions about what happened at a 1989 F.A. Cup game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest F.C. at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield. Cohen has repeatedly argued that thousands of ticketless fans forcing their way into the stadium caused 96 Liverpool fans to be crushed to death, but a government inquiry blamed the police and the design of the stadium. It also found there were very few ticketless fans. Cohen has apologized for causing offense, but he has not retracted his assertions that the fans were to blame. Liverpool fans have beseiged Cohen’s advertisers with emails demanding they stop sponsoring his radio show and Fox Football Fone-In, a TV show on Fox Soccer Channel.

In unrelated news, Cohen’s business Soccer Weekly Inc., is listed as “suspended” by the Secretary of State for California’s web site. Soccer Weekly Inc. is the owner of World Soccer Daily.

Chelsea F.C. Disowns Fox Host in Ad Boycott

        By Jim Edwards | July 24th, 2009 @ 10:22 am

Chelsea F.C. has disowned Fox Soccer Channel host Steven Cohen over his remarks about the death of 96 Liverpool F.C. fans in a stadium crush in 1989. It is the latest turn in an increasingly strange fight between Cohen, fans of Liverpool who have urged a boycott of him, and the advertisers who have departed his show.

Cohen has repeatedly blamed Liverpool fans for the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 people were crushed to death at an overcrowded stadium in Sheffield, England, the venue of a cup tie between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest F.C.. Cohen discussed the deaths on several shows as part of the 20th anniversary of the event.

Several advertisers — including Heineken, FourFourTwo magazine, the Fado pub chain and Ruffneck Wear — pulled out of his Sirius XM radio show in protest of his remarks. Liverpool fans, and a government inquiry, insist the deaths were caused by poor stadium design and lack of communication between officials on the day.

Chelsea has nothing to do with the controversy except that Cohen is a Chelsea fan, frequently wears Chelsea clothing on his show, and often talks about the team. Gareth Mills, a spokesman for Chelsea, said in a statement:

We have distanced ourselves and will continue to distance ourselves from any comments that disrespect the memory of Hillsborough.

We can see no benefit of giving him legitimacy by the club singling him out. Giving Mr. Cohen oxygen is the worst thing we could do. He is not a representative, nor ever has been a representative of the club. We have some 90 million fans worldwide and cannot account for every fan’s opinion.

On its own, the move is de minimus. The statement probably won’t hurt Cohen financially or have any impact on his advertisers. But football fans will consider it extremely serious as clubs almost never single out individual fans in this way.

Cohen did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment. However, Cohen told BNET the campaign against him was “nonsense” and that the people behind it “could not be sadder.” His email is posted verbatim after the jump.

In the past Cohen has argued that the Liverpool fan boycott has created an atmosphere that supresses free speech regarding Hillsborough.

Disclosure: Author is a Liverpool fan.

Steven Cohen announced that today's radio show/podcast would be the last, citing threats against his step-children and their friends by Liverpool supporters as the reason he is closing the show. World Soccer Daily is no more at 3:00 PM EST.

I don't know what is true and what is not behind the scenes here, but I am glad that he is leaving the airwaves and will not have a platform for his nonsense anymore; He's using today's show to attack Liverpool fans and to equate the boycotters with terrorists. Ridiculous. Good riddance.

**** the little dickhead he has screwed his career up as a result of his hated lies and no broadcaster is going to want to touch him with a 10 ft barge pole! Let him have his final 5 minutes attacking LFC and its fans because ultimately he has lost the war.

Grade A first class dickhead! Maybe someone should phone him up and laugh at him!

Children threatened eh, how would he feel if he'd LOST! his kids then heard some vile **** on radio saying it was their own fault they died....WHEN IT WASN'T!!!

Obviously no-body condones children being threatened, it's not on at all, never an option.

But he should consider what he's done, talking about other peoples 'children', dead 'children', in the way he has.

If indeed it happened, i put nothing past this man and his capability and hunger to sully the name of LFC fans.

Anyway, The airwaves will be a better place without him.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

The fact that he's using threats against his step kids, which he's yet to provide evidence of, and labelling us terrorists to prey on the fear and insecurity of Americans to weasel his way out his own lies just proves what a loathsome character he is, along with those who support him.

I seem to remember another piece of **** blathering about his kids being threatened.

                                Says a lot about Cohen.
                                .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
