To be fair to the guy, he has been injured for a season so it is a little premature to right him off completely on the basis of friendlies. I'm not saying he is going to be a world beater or the best player in the world, but I think it is still to early to make a proper judgement.

Degen started for Switzerland yesterday in the sides nil nil draw against Italy. He played 68 minutes before being subbed and apparently faired quite well.
Maybe there's hope for him yet. The Italians put out a strong line up so to contribute towards his sides clean sheet must be seen as a positive.Forwards.......

I get the feeling he's trying too hard, and desperately wants to prove himself not only to us but to himself, hence the insane darting around playing every single position and trying to touch every blade of grass in the last friendly he played - he was scarily crazy manic.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostDegen started for Switzerland yesterday in the sides nil nil draw against Italy. Yet at the same time I also think he's not too certain of his recovery yet hence when he goes does he take a while to get up and then only gingerly and may take a bit to recover.
Hope he can at least provide decent backup if not proper competition for GJ.

I take him playing 68 minutes and not breaking as a pretty big positive to be honest.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostDegen started for Switzerland yesterday in the sides nil nil draw against Italy. He played 68 minutes before being subbed and apparently faired quite well.

I have never (as far as I know) seen him play anything other than friendlies so i have no idea how good he might be. If he can be half decent and stay injury free then that stops our squad looking so bad in terms of depth and that could really boost my confidence in the squad. I quite like the fact that people think he is trying too hard as at least it means he has been putting in the effort and probably testing his body pretty intensively."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

He was not match fit at anytime last season, so it would be harsh to judge him on that or the Crewe display. However, he has now had a full pre-season for the first time in a long while so hopefully he will get better as the season progresses.Originally posted by RedReet View Post
How lucky you are...
We just have to hope that whilst he is still rusty he is not needed full time and therefore doesn't cost us. Especially as one or two bad displays from him in a reds shirt could shatter any confidence he has at present, as well as turn the fans against him. After that there could be no way back. Very unfair mind, as he has shown in the past for Switzerland that he is a vey competent RB. I always had my doubts about him becoming first choice RB for the club, but his past displays would suggest he is more than good enough to be a back up.
We'll just have to see if he can adapt to the English game, with this in all reality being his first season with the club.Forwards.......
