    That old chestnut.

Talk bollocks and then when you're exposed as a fool, try to pretend you were joking. It doesnt wash.

Even if you were joking, your selection of racial prejudice as a 'joke topic' was foolish in the extreme. But that's academic, because everyone knows you werent joking. Same as your 'Real Madrid arent a great club' nonsense. Pure drivel.

I'll leave it at that for your own benefit.

Neil, Could you explain that again? That makes no sense to me. Aspartame is a sweetener which is used in the food industry in low and no-calorie products so you've lost me.

Aspartame is incredibly bad for you and can be fatal in large does

Dr. Betty Martini was joined by a panel of experts throughout the evening. Aspartame, which she described as addictive, can cause a number of problems that people might not realize stem from its consumption, including headaches, dizziness, mood change, and joint pain. Its effects can be slow and subtle, but quite serious-- sometimes leading to miscarriages and seizures, she said.

Consumer representative James Turner spoke about the history of aspartame and its pathway to approval. A public inquiry held in 1980 ruled it shouldn't be marketed because of its association with brain tumors, but Donald Rumsfeld (who served as head of the pharmaceutical company G. D. Searle at the time) managed to engineer its approval, he recounted.

Stephen Fox, a consumer advocate, discussed efforts to get aspartame rescinded from the market, and suggested a new FDA commissioner was needed to carry this through. He recommended the documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poison World.

Psychiatrist Dr. Ralph Walton noted that aspartame is paradoxically associated with obesity, as it increases appetite and cravings for carbohydrates. When interviewed for a 60 Minutes story in 1996 (view here) he pointed out studies which touted its safety were all funded by the industry and independent studies all found problems.

Dr. H.J. Roberts, the author of Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic said the negative effects of the sweetener can be cumulative, especially when combined with other toxins such as fluoride. Martini recommended natural sugar alternatives such as Just Like Sugar and stevia (in its pure form).

There's lots of stuff on google including this gem:

Further, all the thin people I know (including myself) wouldn't touch diet soft drinks, nor regular soft drinks. In fact, soft drinks are simply off the menu for anyone concerned with their health. They tend to be consumed by lower-income, lower-intelligence people who are more prone to advertiser influence and can't think for themselves.
Mmmm. The word **** springs to mind?

I seem to remember seeing plausible sources of similar info but (not the bit quoted, the rest of it).

Obviously anyone who speaks about others like that is indeed a ****.

Still, it doesn't invalidate the concerns about aspartame. I heard something on the BBC about it being linked with switching off the area of the brain linked with appetite suppression/monitoring - forgive me if that's unscientific but I'm not a scientist and that's what I understood from the report.

It seems perfectly feasible to me that an apparent wonder product of one decade is discovered to have negative effects as understanding of physical processes develops and more time is allowed to check for long term damage etc. Clinical trials don't show up everything - that's why some drugs and products get licensed for use and then later are withdrawn or restricted.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Looking through the shelves in the s.market today.nearly every drink on them has aspartame in it,even non diet ones.Kinda hard to avoid drinking it.

Either its loaded with aspartame or its loaded with sugar, both can be very harmful if enough is consumed

A lot of "full fat" beverages in the UK require artificial sweeteners on top of sugar because it is these beverages that garner the most favour in consumer tests. It's what the UK palate goes for. From my knowledge of beverage formulations it is only the UK that do this to non low-cal drinks.

What's even madder is many english ciders contain artificial sweeteners. I guess that's why none compare to Magners

I do think that if we renewed with Carlsberg, itd be a mistake. We really should ditch the alcohol sponors and get another brand in.
