Yeah..I can see it now...when Aki comes into the team...suddenly Babel will:

1) grow a set
2) develop a football brain
3) develop vision
4) develop a first touch
5) be able to make the correct decision on the pitch

That wasn't really the point i was making - I have been a longtime critic of Babel and I'm still not holding my breath however the way I see it is thus:

His strengths are his pace and when he comes on to the ball he can take people on and has a good shot. In the Spurs game a couple of times he used these qualities to mean that he ran in from the left to take a position centrally where you might expect a forward to be. this sort of position is currently not being generated often by us as our creative play is not gooe enough and our team is disjointed - therefore teh opportunities arrive mainly from long balls which are by their very nature low odds.

If the team gelled (I think it will do given time with Lucas but I know people don't have faith and I'm willing accept i may be wrong hence my mention of Aquilani) I think more of the type of situations babel is best suited to exploit would be created.

In addition to this I agree with many that he is a confidence player. We have also seen how much better Kuyt looks when he is confident even though he isn't a stereotypical confidence player as he always contributes no matter what. Even so i think some of the criticism of babel is unfair as his technique is no where near as bad as is made out. His decision making is however poor.

Surely it's beneficial to be flexible when necessary though, rather than completely set in stone?

I would rather he had the ability to be the ideal manager for every player under him but that is not going to happen.

But in the main players are a simple enough breed. Play them and they'll love you and be happy. Leave them out and they'll get moody.

He certainly has, in fact(no pun intended)Rafa has probbaly given him more than he deserves.
With every passing appearance he makes the more and more i'm giving up on Babel.

Ryan Babel back to Ajax on loan

Liverpool winger Ryan Babel admits he may have to consider a loan move to former club Ajax in January to boost his World Cup hopes.

Babel has struggled to make a sustained impact since joining Liverpool from Ajax two years ago and was recently challenged to take his game up a level by manager Rafa Benitez.

The Holland international started the Reds' opening match of this season against Tottenham, but has subsequently made just one late substitute's appearance in the defeat by Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old is unhappy with his limited outings so far this term and believes promises have been broken.

"There have been a lot of things promised, but they haven't been followed up," Babel told De Telegraaf.

"I would get to play for more minutes and have more chances, but after the first defeat, I only lost my place."

A return to Ajax has been mooted and Babel believes a temporary deal in the January transfer window could provide his best chance of securing a place in Holland's squad for next summer's World Cup.

He added: "I think half a season at Ajax with a view to the World Cup wouldn't be a bad idea. I can add something to the Ajax squad.

"Loaning me out was not an option (in the summer). Now we have agreed to review the situation in January.

"I see the current situation as a signal that I really have to get playing."

come in, plays ****e and then gets bombed out for a player who everytime he plays he gives it is all in benayoun.

How can he complain? he got given a chance and didnt take it. ..... again

We will end up making a massive loss on him if he goes to Ajax. I just cannot understand how he is discarded after a couple of games this season when Rafa said he was expecting him to deliver this term. At least give him the confidence of a few games in a row before judging him.

actually i dont have a major issue with that initial selection only becuase i am not privvy to training session and i am sure Babel had looked really good in training i read somewhere.

no. drop lucas. he isnt up to it but stays in the team. untill aquilani gets fit drop ste back with mash and play babel up with torres. at leats then if he fails he cant say he hasnt had afair chance playing his natural position.
