I think he may work better on the right as it gives him a purpose
On the left it's either (a) down the line onto his left, which he doesn't favour doing (b) cut inside and shoot (c) cut inside and run straight into 3 defenders
On the right it's a bit easier (less thinking, which clearly isn't his strong point) - either go down the line and cross, or lay it back and drift in with the help of Johnson. This negates his shooting a little, but he never ****ing scores anyway

While you will be unsurprised to hear that I agree that minimising Babels thinking is good for him I think the analysis that Babel is better on the right is wrong. He is basically the same wherever he plays - when he gets something right it looks effortless and you get the impression that he has found his perfect position. However every time this has happened up until now he has let us down shortly after.Originally posted by wiw View PostI think he may work better on the right as it gives him a purpose

He's been running straight into players on the right (in the last two games) just as much as he did on the left.
He has however started looking like a player who cares which is to be applauded."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Its true that if gerrard plays behind torres then kuyt will be first choice for the right. However if we choose to play gerrard deeper then with kuyt in the middle babel could play down the right. With johnson this could be pretty swift.
Wont happen against the bigger teams though.Quit your jibber jabber!!!
Jermaine, you know the song Billie Jean...is it about the tennis player??

I think he always tries, but has been letting frustration get the better of him during games. If he gives the ball he needs to suck it up and get on with the game, instead of sulking.Originally posted by dww View PostHe has however started looking like a player who cares which is to be applauded.
He has massive potential, but like everyone else I'm tired of hearing that phrase and not seeing an end result. Time to deliver.Forwards.......

I think we would lose something from Johnson if Babel started on the right, and Kuyt is getting a lot of goals of late. Kuyt and Johnson look an ideal partnership.Originally posted by Bender View Postneed to try babel on the right.....might be the making of a great player
For the time being I would have Babel as someone who can fill in for others or make an impact as a late sub. When he starts delivering on a regular basis he can then ask about a starting place.Forwards.......

Yeah I possibly phrased that badly. I think the thing is that he hasn't not tried bu the hasn't worked extra hard when things go against him which is sometimes what is needed and is certainly a good way to make an impression on a casual observer. If things go against Babel he has in the past let things drift in the last couple of games he has chased down every time he has lost the ball even if he hasn't always done so effectively.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostI think he always tries, but has been letting frustration get the better of him during games. That's what I've noticed and is the only way he will ever be a regular starter in a Rafa Benitez XI.Originally posted by dww View PostYeah I possibly phrased that badly. Fernando Torres paid tribute to the impact of Ryan Babel after the Dutchman came off the bench to supply him with the winning goal in Saturday's 3-2 victory at West Ham.
El Nino was the talk of the Capital after taking his tally to five league goals for the season with a double against the Hammers - but he was quick to shrug off his heroics by praising his teammate's contribution to the Reds' third successive league triumph.
"Everyone knows Ryan is a fantastic player," said Torres.
"He played on the right wing and he gave me a fantastic cross which was easy for me to attack the ball and score. It is easy for a striker when the cross is as good as that.
"He is a player with quality who can do things like this, so without Ryan I couldn't have scored. It's thanks to him I could score the goal to win it for us.

Ryan Babel says he is fully commited to fulfilling his potential at Liverpool, after coming on as a substitute to help the Reds to victory at West Ham on Saturday.
Following comments in the Dutch media suggesting he would be interested in a move back to former club Ajax, Babel now says he doesn’t know where those quotes came from.
He said, “I didn’t say any of those things. I did an interview in Holland and I don’t know who in England got hold of it but it was the worst translation I have ever seen.
“The fact is I’m very happy here and I don’t want to leave to go anywhere. Yes, there is a lot of competition for places at Liverpool but that’s the same at every top club.
“When I got back to Liverpool I went straight to the manager and told him it wasn’t true. He accepted that and there is no problem. Now I just want to concentrate on playing.”
After being dropped for last weekend’s 4-0 win at home to Burnley, Babel supplied the cross for Fernando Torres’ winner in the 3-2 win at Upton Park this weekend.
And now Babel insists he is focused and ready to impress enough to hold down a first team place at Anfield.
“It was great to be out there and I’m really pleased I was able to help us get a crucial three points,” he said.
“Before I came on the manager said I needed to bring some energy to the game and that I needed to run at them.
“I enjoyed it and that will give me some confidence. Now I hope to carry on like this.
“If I keep working hard then hopefully I can get some more minutes and in the end get a place back in the starting line-up.”

Exactly Ryan. I support him and think he can come good. But the same comments could have been said last year. Now is the time for action and results, not talk.Originally posted by Bender View Post“If I keep working hard then hopefully I can get some more minutes and in the end get a place back in the starting line-up.”Forwards.......

Stevie G on Babel after his first season with us, in which he won the young player of the year award.Babel praise
On Babel, Gerrard continued: "As for Ryan, he is still young and has made a big impact from the bench, and he has also done well in some matches he has started and he has a bright future.
"If he's willing to learn then he has got the right players around him to help his game. But it is all about Ryan now and how much he wants to take his game to the next level, because he has certainly got the attributes.
"He has got the ability, there is no doubt about it. He is strong, quick, can set goals up and score. He's got it all.
"But I have seen it with so many players when they have had this ability and not taken it to the next level. It is up to him now how much he wants to be one of the top players about, because he certainly could be."
