I don't think Rafa was too peturbed by the whole situation, cos we know our manager doesn't hide his feelings if he feels he has been misled, so i'm guessing people are making more out of this than they should, based purely on speculation.

Liverpool to benefit as Tom Hicks lines up buyers
      03 September 2009 | By Adam Fraser

The financial concerns that have dogged English soccer club Liverpool could be a thing of the past if the club's co-owner, Tom Hicks, completes the US$600 million sale of the Texas Rangers, and focuses his interests on the Premier League.

Hicks, who dissolved Hicks Sports Marketing Group earlier this summer, was reportedly forced to depend on US$15 million from Major League Baseball to help pay wages at the franchise in August. Despite that, he appeared to rethink his decision to sell, announcing, "There is a way [to keep the team], and I'm working on that. So we'll see."

However, sources close to Hicks now insist he will sell. According to Sports Business Journal, the Texas Rangers have received letters from six prospective buyers. That is good news for Liverpool, where there has been widespread dissatisfaction with Hicks and his co-owner, George Gillett, since their takeover in 2007. Now, with both men consolidating their interests, it appears that Liverpool will have an increased amount of attention - and financial support - from the two Americans.

"The process is moving forward and we're encouraged by what's happening there," said Bob DuPuy, MLB's president and chief operating officer, to SBJ.
      Is it ****!!!

I'd be interested to know what the wage bill is each year? That must be the biggest money spunker.

Dunno...shall we say 25 first team players, on £30,000 a week (probably a low estimation, in today's times)...that's £750,000 a week....£39 million a year in wages...i expect it is a lot higher than this in reality, especially if we factor in player bonus' etc.

Old figures that have gone up, and Man City are probably in the top three now.

TOP PREMIER LEAGUE WAGE BILLS 2006/7
              Chelsea - £132.8m (£114m)
              Manchester Utd - £92.3m (£85.4m)
              Arsenal - £89.7m (£82.9m)
              Liverpool - £77.6m (£68.9m)
              Newcastle Utd - £62.4m (£52.2m)
              (2005/6 wages in brackets)

Oh, here are newer numbers http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/t...ver-wages-debt

Looking at the Guardian link Stoke's wage-turnover ratio is over 100% That shouldn't be allowed. And our Wage bill hasn't increased by much over the years, but United spent almost 30 million more on wages in 2008 then they did in 2007.

If Purslow is to be believed our wage bill must have increased by about £20m or so this season............

Will be interesting to see how that develops, personally don't buy that but we'll see, we lost Xabi, Sami and Arbeloa off the books plus Itandje, and brought in Johnson, Sotiris and Alberto plus the raises for some senior players, doubt it. It would mean something like 380.000 extra per week. Lets say the senior players, Agger, Yossi, Kuyt, Torres and Gerrard all got 30.000 each that would make it 150.000 extra a week. Then the difference in wages between the new players vs. the outgoing should be something like 230.000.

Simplistic I know, but I just don't believe Purslow or the clowns.

I think you'll find that if you look through my past posts I do not believe him either.

Perhaps, good point, that could account for some of it.

Plus the addition of signing on fees as well, or a loyalty bonus...?? It all adds up, and that money will come out of the clubs revenue stream.
