Who wears the arm band is largely a ceremonial/press thing in my view. Gerrard is the symbol of the team and as the best local player and a certain starter should be the captain. We need more leaders in the team though, and also different types of leader. The example set by Alonso and Hyyypia in tough situations was excellent in that they carried on in exactly the same way."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

on the button dave as always........to many players do go missing, but then i do think its down to the captain to motivate.
we do seem to be missing that team spirit that has bonded us so well in the last few seasons.
I wonder if the expectation has got to them? over the years we have bottled it so many times, thought this year was going to be different_____________________________________
Weak willed, Wank or do they have a masterplan?
Think we have the answer..Slot!!

Agreed, Etherington is not as good as any of the players listed.Originally posted by Operation View PostRiera.

Playing in a different team with different expectations, you can't compare playing for Stoke to playing for us. Riera has been injured this season, Dossena hasn't hardly played and Babel has no brain and they are all better than Etherington stillOriginally posted by -V- View PostHe's performing much better than any of those players have for us. The supply he provides down the left is far better than what we are getting

Agree to disagree. Im just making the point that we have wasted alot of money on those 3 players that have failed to prove themselves for us. Etherington on the other hand cost stoke £2m, is a no-nonsense old fashioned winger who with a great delivery and is performing well with worse players around him. He was a decent player for west ham and with a bargain price-tag he is still impressing at stoke.Originally posted by Mattshark View PostPlaying in a different team with different expectations, you can't compare playing for Stoke to playing for us. I would take Etherington at £2m for our left wing over any of those 3 players.
Anyway thats my opinion. It saddens me at how much money we have wasted on players who are no better than him

Sorry but Riera has been a good player for us.

Etherington was an average player at West Ham and is at Stoke too where it should be far, far easier to stand out especially as he would be under a lot less pressure than any of our players.Originally posted by -V- View PostRiera has been an average player for us. There have been loads of games where iv barely noticed he was even on the park
