Just the ability to inject some pace and tempo into our attacks, made a massive difference.

When players do things quickly, it commits opposition defenders and it makes things happen for you. Babel was our best player by a mile tonight and actually worked hard too, put in proper effort.

It's obviously because he's ****ting it about not making the world cup, but whatever the reason, if he makes things happen for us in an attacking sense, then he's a useful option.

Should start at City, but predictably he wont. Too much attacking intent.

we played because they let us play, and we had no-one who could put in a decent cross, and no-one who could get on the end of one.

Stevie imo had a crappy game, so did Aquilani and Aurelio. Carra at right back didn't work out that great either.

Positives from tonight were Kuyt, Babel making an effort, Pacheco (with the assist if i saw correct through my crappy stream?) and Masch, the clean sheet, and the fact they're gonna have to come out of their shell for the return leg which might leave us some space to exploit.

In fairness we play like that almost every time when we're up against a team we should batter - and that isn't just when we're having a bad time of it.

Decent cameo from Babel after he got his eye in.

No we don't there just injured or cup tied.
Maxi, Bena, Torres and Gerrard could all open any team up!

It's not the end of the day yet!

Aquilani's time at Liverpool has been appalling, I can't see the great player in him.

He's not physical, he's not strong, he's not pacy, he doesn't demand the ball, he doesn't put a shift in, he's not quick minded, he can't tackle, and he passes sideways way more than Lucas ever has.

Trying not to slag the lad too much but he looks like a player who can only play in the slow pace of the Italian league.

As for the performance, all perspiration, no inspiration really. Babel tried and didn't do too bad when he came on, Pacheco had a couple of decent touches, Gerrard tried, Mascherano did his job excellently.

Singing danny pachecho to the tune of xabi alonso must have given him a boost to, was actually nice to hear something other than carra and the away fans by the time he came on to.

Some people will just never ever admit or acknowledge any negative points about us. There's always gonna be an excuse, anything that lays the blame away from our team and/or manager.

You'd think we were producing faultless displays, to read some of the comments.

Much better shift in attitude from Babel I thought

Stream must have been really bad if Kuyt was a positive for you

Hopefully this is the case and he can show that he has more than potential. We really do lack pace and creativity and he is one of the few players capable of offering them.

Babel was a massive positive tonight as was Pacheco. When gerrard moved back into the middle he was able to pull the strings and pass the ball around where as Aquilani didnt make much impact. I don't know why rafa doesnt keep stevie in the middle and give babel a go up top.

I think this season is a write off for Aquilani, I'm not going to judge him until next season, he's not fully fit and hasn't had a preseason behind him, so is playing catch up. IMO he should use this season to get used to the pace and physical nature of the English game, and some idea of the way he needs to play.

We can then judge him next season
