I think the problem will be that whoever comes in will absolutely have to concentrate on the league. We lacked strength in depth to challenge on multiple fronts last season - I suspect it will be worse this season.Originally posted by calvoboy View PostDon't give up altogether. We're not likely to win the League or Champions League any time soon, but if Hodgson could take Fulham to the Europa league final then he must have a decent chance of winning it with a better squad like ours?
It's the league I'd be worried about. Despite everything, and all rafa's tactical failings against lesser teams, we were very unlucky this year and still could have scraped 4th. Next year will be harder with Spurs and City strengthening and us losing players....for the first time in 10 years I don't think 4th is a realistic expectation, it's become a hope instead.
I'm still not convinced about these claims of Rafa's tactical failings. I'm also pretty certain that Hodgson has always been at least as conservative as Rafa."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

When it comes to the choice of manager, we clearly have very different minimum requirements.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

I think it will be much harder to challenge on all fronts, but we should walk into the last 16 of the Europa league without necessarily focusing on it, shouldn't we? Or do I have to lower my expectations even further?Originally posted by dww View PostI think the problem will be that whoever comes in will absolutely have to concentrate on the league. You don't think that we should have attacked the lower teams in the league more in recent years, and agreed with playing two defensive midfielders against the likes of Portsmouth? I'm not slating him, on the whole I think he was tactically excellent, but I do think he showed far too much respect to some sides in the league.Originally posted by dww View PostI'm still not convinced about these claims of Rafa's tactical failings. Anyway, he's gone now, so there's no point turning this into a debate about Rafa's approach. I agree with you though that I don't think Hodgson would necessarily be any better in that regard.

Don't see why a manager being British is, of itself, a good thing.
Don't really see how Hodgson's "mindset is a bit more in tune with ours as fans". I think his Fulham teams tactics have been pretty limited and his inability to make them play away from the cottage is not promising.
I think the British thing is just down to xenophobia.

i do too and its not in itself a good thing. the only benefit is that there seems to have been an edge of xenophobia in the media at times imo which we can basically do without.
alternatively, Redknapp im sure gets some added support because he's british as do o'neil and fergie - against wenger, ancellotti and mancini. so roy will be on the 'right side' in that regard.
