    He came second.

As Gerard pointed out, he won more trophies than Benitez and apart from a couple of players, left him with a team which would ultimately lead to all of his successes.

I agree that Benitez built a team that should have won the league that year, but due to a number of draws aagainst weaker teams failed to fulfill its potential.

Dont get me wrong. Benitez was the far superior intellect when it came to football but if we look at the facts in the cold light of day If we had not have scored that goal against Olympiakos, how would Benitiez' record have looked.
Jacques Brel is alive and well and playing at Anfield

        How annoying:

Asked about his reign compared to Rafa's, Houllier added: "I would say this is my pride because I won more trophies. The players even managed to win the Champions League the year after I left. My pride is to say that we won more trophies than Rafa."
The players? The two most important players in the CL run in 2005 - Gerrard aside - were Alonso and Garcia...players we certainly would not have signed had Houllier still been here. I don't like saying it 'cos he's a nice man, but he's deluded.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

                  Listen,

If our new manager whover he may be wins the league or whatever next season with just a couple of changes to the squad, then of course we have to hold our hands up and say that Rafa was responsible for signing the players for this team, and by rights would be more than partly responsible.

the frustration with Rafa would just be greater however that he did not turn his team into winners.

That is the point with GH. Noone doubts his judgement for signing good players but in the end it was Rafa that made his team winners not him. Exactly in the same way that Rafa took over a great team at Valencia and consolidated them into a ruthless winning team.

I believe that what we have today at liverpool is not that far from a great team, and that is thanks to Rafa. With a bit more luck than rafa has had this season and perhaps a more touchy feely approach, maybe someone can change liverpools fortunes around dramtically with rapidly changing the team.

I think Rafas legacy of what he has left Liverpool with is greater than his legacy from a success point of view. I think the work he has done with the youth squad and the cuurent squad is not all bad.

There ain't no way anyone is going to understand Kenny if he takes up a temp role..

Rushie or Sammy to translate methinks.

i doubt houlliers abitliy to sign good players. most of his signings where dodgy and that was when being backed not having to scrimp on second and third choice players.

Absolutely. Choosing Diouf when we had Anelka still pisses me off to this day. He might still have been at Anfield now as an absolute legend.

Houllier was indulged, not questioned and backed without reserve. One Sami Hyypia does not excuse all the rest of the dross he brought in.
