I'm not making a point here as I don't know if RM paid us in installments or not, but from a lot of comments on here there seems to be the belief that we pay for all our transfers in installments, we recieve payments in full, we look at Rafa's transfer in net but compare to other clubs gross.

If we did recieve one payment from RM surely half of it was set aside for Aqualani and not all used to pay off debt? Still not great mind but even so, it still doesn't excuse the fact that we're just 5 points ahead of Everton who have scored more points than us this year. I can excuse us losing ground on the top 2 but not in finding ourselves this close to a club with far fewer resources than us, far fewer world class players and arguably a team which has suffered more injuries to first team players than us.

There are two arguments here which should not be clouded and each should be accpeted. Firstly, we have to accept that our finacial situation has instigated our fall (possibly from the big four) but secondly, with our resources we should also accept that we should still be doing far better than we are. Our away record (4 wins this season) is whats ****ed us up the most (in terms of CL qualification) and this is not all down to having to sell Alonso and having to suffer the terrible problem of having to make do with a cheapo £17m replacement (who just happened to be injured when we purchased him).

Most transfer deals are done over installments but it was common knowledge in the summer in fact I think Rafa confirmed it in an interview that we got £30m cash in 1 payment from RM.
At that same point in time we paid 5m euro's for Aquilaini so even though there are more installments to be triggered in the Aquilani fee they can be covered by continuing to increase other revunue streams, match day revenue.
Basically we received cash for Alonso and bought Aquilani on HP.

Bash Rafa for many many things, being to conservative, not wanking off Gerrard enough, playing 2 holding mid fielders at home plus how ever many other things you can think of but don't try to claim he had acceptable amounts of money to spend in the last few transfer windows because it just isn't true.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

True. It's just a shame he didn't use what he had very well.

A mate of mine is off to Spain at the end of this month and will be having lunch with Xabi and Alvaro so it will be interesting to hear their side of the story.

Mate, I'm far from alone in that opinion.

Torres has moaned & sulked too much for my liking too, but at least he's putting a few goals in. Gerrard is about 10% the player he was last season- when we need him most. Ultimately we pay his (massive) wages- he's answerable to us. Whether he has a problem with Rafa or not, it's the club & the fans who feel the brunt of his attitude as much as anyone.

Benitez: Torres is right - we need new blood
                    Wednesday, 7 April 2010 16:19

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez agrees with star striker Fernando Torres' frank assessment of his team's failings.

Torres has claimed that a spate of summer departures meant 'everything got messed up' for the Reds this season.

Having begun the campaign among the favourites for the Barclays Premier League title, Liverpool are looking increasingly unlikely to even finish fourth.

A draw at Birmingham on Sunday has left them sixth, four points adrift of that all-important Champions League-qualifying position, having played a game more than both Manchester City in fourth and Tottenham in fifth.

Benitez concedes his squad need major investment this summer to force its way back among the title contenders.

The Spaniard said: 'I agree with Fernando about a lot of things. He talks about it being a pity we finished with 86 points last year and we couldn't progress.

'We need to sign some players, we need to bring some money. We need an investor and then we can challenge in a better way.

'The players are working so hard and they feel they can do more.

'Fernando the other day (at Birmingham), he was feeling really tired. He was trying and the other players were trying but while we don't have the investor it will be difficult to go one step forward.'

Benitez was speaking ahead of tomorrow's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Benfica at Anfield.

Liverpool trail 2-1 from the first meeting in Lisbon but the competition looks like their best hope of salvaging something from the season.

Benitez said: 'We will try to do our best tomorrow to win.

'Hopefully we can balance the books this year.

'We need now to perform on the pitch and create a better situation for the new investors.'

When asked whether he could elaborate on whether owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have offered any indication that new investment might be imminent, Benitez avoided the question in familiar style.

He said: 'I understand the players, we have to stick together and prepare for a Europa League game.'

That is also correct, we don't have the luxury of spending £32m on a striker and only trusting him to play against Bolton or Hull or Portsmouth.

Or £18-20 million each on a handful of squad players (Nani, Anderson, Carrick).
