Liverpool FC midfielder Maxi Rodriguez has praised his Anfield colleague Javier Mascherano, claiming his compatriot is an inspiration on and off the pitch. The Argentina captain is allegedly on the verge of agreeing a new deal at the club, and Maxi believes it would a major boost for Rafa Benitez as the club bid to fight of stiff competition from Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa in the race for fourth place in the Premier League.

Liverpool FC are currently in sixth, three points behind Tottenham Hotspur and four behind Manchester City, and news of Mascherano’s pending commitment to the club, in a week when both Rafa Benitez and Fernando Torres questioned the club’s direction, would be a major boost for the Anfield club.

Maxi confirmed his Liverpool FC colleague was close to agreeing a new deal, less than 6 months after he was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona, and suggested the former West Ham midfielder’s presence would be an inspiration for many years to come.

The Liverpool FC midfielder told the club’s official television channel: “Javier is a fantastic player and when he signs his contract it will be great news for the club,"

"He is also fantastic to have in the dressing room and he is an inspiration.”

"He loves playing for Liverpool in front of these wonderful supporters and is very happy to play for the club for a long time to come."

Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

comfortably best keeper in the premiership, certainly top 3 in the world, and if it wasn't for madrids golden boy casillas or if riena was any other nationality he'd be no.1 - i wouldn't swap him for any other keeper around, young, atheltic, confident, strong, quick reflexes, learns from mistakes, always improving, superb charactor, great distribution.............a future captain?

My dad is an old school fan - one of these who always compares everythign to his era/glory days eg when i say Gerrard is class he will say "yes.....but souness" etc....................he happily says though that reina is the best keeper we have ever had.

You all hate him compared to how much I love him.

Highlight of the season. Pepe is a genuine legend in the making.

                  "yes...but Clemence"

Joking aside this is fantastic news for us. He is a class act and a great ambassador for us, always talks Liverpool Football Club up.

Actually, I don't think he's as good as Clemence yet. But he's the nearest we've had, and if he maintains this season's standards over the next 5 years it'll be a close call.

Reina has finally put pen to paper on a six-year deal that replaces his current agreement and extends his Anfield commitment to 2016.

The goalkeeper has been Liverpool’s outstanding performer of a difficult campaign, having already proven a huge success since arriving from Villarreal for £6million in the summer of 2005.

Reina is on course to win a fourth Golden Gloves award for keeping the most clean sheets during a Premier League campaign.

He is the latest Liverpool to sign a long-term contract, following the example of Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Yossi Benayoun during the past 12 months.

Reina said: “Why commit? Because I am happy here and I think the club is happy too. I see no reason to leave.”

                              I wouldn't but I'd happily take a cuddle.

I do love the bloke though.
