It wasn't so much the first game (Spurs 2-1), because we recovered and won our second game 4-0 (Stoke), we then lost to Villa at Home 3-1 and went on to win our next 4 (Bolton 3-2, Burnley 4-0, West Ham 3-2 and Hull 6-1). For me the problems weren't so much the early results (although they were disappointing), I think the problem was in the way we were playing, things just weren't working out with the team set up and this was affecting the players. We were leaking goals (7 in our first 4 games) and there were clearly problems. I know it's a cliche but I think a solid defnce gives the rest of the team confidence and we didn't have that.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
Yeah, those away wins at Bolton and West Ham were worrying too. Obviously we won but to let two in in both games and be so badly stretched by two **** teams...well, the writing was on the wall.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
August and September are ridiculous. Four toughest opponents not names Man United and Chelsea in the first and last two games of the season. Three of them away. We'll be in the bottom half when October starts.
To be honest I'm not too bothered about having a tough opening game, as I feel we quite often do badly in them anyway, we're likely to drop points to Arsenal anyway, so perhaps it's better to have them early on and drop points in one game instead of two...
On the other hand a poor result on the opening day could knock our confidence and with a difficult run of fixtures early doors that could have a negative effect on the whole season, so it's difficult to know what to think really.
