I still think that preseason is more or less uncorrelated with the season unless there are extenuating circumstances (injuries or unsettled players). Players attitudes tend to change a great deal when a competitive match comes along.

Perhaps I just lack the knowledge though to know what are the important things to get right in preseaon that do impact on the performance in the season.

The thing is though next week is our first competitive match. I know people will belittle the challenge and competition but I think the Europa league qualifiers will be a much better way of judging the way the squad is progressing under Roy.

You need to get your rhythm and shape going though, in order to carry it through to the league games when that starts, so that it's almost seamless.

I think learning the tactics if the new manager, where he wants players at corners, throw, FKs etc is far more significant a problem. 9 days is not long to learn a new approach when we face a top team first game. A certain amount of improvisation will be required.
