Hansen just saved a penalty too

Was highly rated here and has played with Icelandic youth teams U-19,18,17,16 and scored quite a few goals. Is a midfielder and went on trial at Man Utd. at one point and wanted by Ajax as well as several other teams.

Worth noting that Iceland has a very promising generation coming up now and in the next few years we'll see huge improvements in the national team.

He is an exciting prospect for Iceland at least.

Daniel Pacheco scored a superb goal in front of Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool Reserves beat Sunderland 2-1 at the Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

Nikola Saric bagged the other goal on a day when the young Reds played some lovely football as Dalglish, Steve Clarke and Sammy Lee watched from the sidelines.

Liverpool's caretaker boss will also have been delighted to see Jay Spearing come through 90 minutes on his return from a fracture just above his ankle.

The only negative for manager John McMahon was the late dismissal of goalkeeper Martin Hansen for a foul which led to Sunderland getting a consolation strike from the penalty spot.

The result keeps the second string top of their section of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North.

The opening 20 minutes were brought to life by 17-year-old Suso, who showed off his blend of wizardry and composure alongside the returning Spearing in central midfield.

The Spaniard produced a great delivery on 21 minutes which Emmanuel Mendy might have used better.

Tom Ince, back from a loan spell under his dad at Notts County, threatened on 27 minutes with a dainty turn and shot from the edge of the box which slid just wide.

Minutes later Pacheco gained possession before taking his markers one way and then the other. His eventual shot from 20 yards forced a fingertip save from Trevor Carson in the Sunderland goal.

Ince was next up with a well-struck hit which stung the goalkeeper's palms.

Sunderland had to wait 40 minutes for a serious effort on goal when midfielder Adam Reed let fly from distance before watching the ball whizz wide.

Liverpool countered with a cross-field ball from Jack Robinson which was taken well by Ince on the right. The No.7 cut inside and sent a curled effort into Carson's reach.

The breakthrough finally came on 43 minutes after a dinked ball into the box from Saric. Pacheco worked himself into a yard of space to shoot back across goal on his weaker left foot, managing to find the top corner.

The lead was doubled on 50 minutes when Spearing lofted a pass to Pacheco, who cut back to Saric. The former Bosnian refugee - who has missed large chunks of 2010-11 with a broken leg - bent his shot towards the roof of the net before wheeling away in celebration.

Pacheco could have made it 3-0 on 62 minutes following a decent ball from Ince, the Spanish U19 international leading defender Liam Bagnall astray with a superlative touch before shooting against the outside of the post.

Sunderland were gifted a lifeline when Craig Lynch ghosted into the box before falling under the slightest contact from the otherwise excellent John Flanagan. Justice was done, however, when Danish stopper Hansen saved Matthew Fletcher's penalty.

Down at the other end Ince crafted space for a cross before substitute David Amoo headed against the woodwork.

Flanagan was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet with a close-range poke after a mistake from the defender.

The one sour note for Liverpool came on 87 minutes after a mistake from substitute Victor Palsson, prompting Hansen to foul Fletcher in the box. The referee flashed a straight red card and Nathan Wilson sent newly introduced goalie Jamie Stephens the wrong way.

Liverpoolfc.tv man of the match: Dani Pacheco edges out Tom Ince, Flanagan and Suso.

Liverpool Reserves: Hansen, Flanagan, Robinson (Palsson 73), Spearing (c), Darby, Mendy, Ince, Suso (Amoo 73), Saric, Pacheco, Bruna (Stephens 87). Subs not used: Roberts, Banton.

I thought Saric joined someone on loan. Vitesse I think it was?

Interesting to see Pacheco outshining Suso despite all the heaps of praise the latter has received recently. Really hope Kenny gives Pacheco a proper chance in the first team.

Just seen highlights, two cracking goals. Would love to see the likes of Pacheco make the bench, but it's hard to see for who.

Until recently you could only use 5 players on the bench, my feeling is we should look to have a split of 5 experienced and 2 younger players on the bench for most, if not all matches.

Well the bench did have Shelvey, Wilson and N’Gog. I was actually gonna suggest that the likes of Jovanovic be dropped from the bench to make room, but he wasn’t even there and it’s unlikely that N’Gog or Babel would be demoted.

Would love to know Kenny’s thoughts on Babel though. Does he think that as a manager he’ll be able to help him realize his potential or does he consider him a lost cause? If it’s the latter then he really should get rid ASAP, although personally I’ve been impressed with Babel’s attitude this year and hope Kenny can get the best out of him.

I think you could easily imagine Pacheco instead of Babel or Shelvey depending on the opposition really (at least if Gerrard, Lucas and Meireles were there for midfield).

Babel is an interesting choice. When in a more second striker sort of role he has done okay this season. I can't imagine him being thought of as a long term option but his pace might mean that he sticks around the squad until the end of the season. A lot depends on whether we can get any one in I would guess. I really struggle to see him developing the match intelligence to be a really top level player.

I was always one of Babel’s biggest detractors, mainly because I was sick of listening to people saying he should be playing ahead of Kuyt (when Kuyt was playing well) and that he was never given a chance which wasn’t true. No doubt it’s thanks to Twitter that I’ve warmed to him now, but if he can’t learn anything from Kenny then there is clearly no place in our side for him. He seems happy at the club though and his recent twittering indicates that he really cares, so although he’s never likely to be the world class talent that we took a chance on signing, with a bit of work he could still be a useful player to have, especially with Kuyt and Maxi getting on in years. It’s amusing to look back now but I remember when (or just before he signed) he was compared to Henry in an interview and he said he felt he was more like Bergkamp.

In terms of the bench, we also have Cole to come back in who would obviously be ahead in the pecking order so it’s a tough call for Kenny

Just seen the game and it seemed throughout the whole match Suso was under instructions not to go forwards and also to release the ball early to more forward players, i.e. no Suso-magic please. Even Spearing played further forward than Suso.

This could be partly to teach him the importance of midfield positioning which he does lack, and partly to avoid injury through over exertion as he played on the weekend.

Thanks Chief. The fact the suso got a mention as a lesser motm is pleasing in itself. Good signs from the lad & pleased pacheco played well in front of the gaffer

Don't get me wrong, Suso did have an average match. There were at least 5 players who were better than him on the day. But Suso was noticeably going at 60-65% of his usual abilities which made me think he was told to take it easy going forwards and defend more.

Which kind of confused me as to why he played at all if he was tired from the weekend. My hope is that we're trying to fasttrack some defensive abilities into him so he makes that leap to the first team sooner rather than later.
