Good result.
LIVERPOOL U18 2 Man City u18 1
Report by John Gallagher at the Academy
Scorer(s) - Raheem Sterling, Adam Morgan
Half Time - 1-0
Venue - Liverpool Academy, Kirkby
Date - Sat 5 Feb 2011
Star Man - Matty McGiveron
The Reds Under 18s came away with a deserved victory after edging out Man City 2-1 in an entertaining and hard fought game in non-stop rain at the Academy on Saturday morning. Raheem Sterling celebrated being awarded a first team squad number by opening the scoring, and although City scored a terrific equaliser, England u17 striker Adam Morgan ensured it was the home side who collected all three points.
Rodolfo Borrell's side started off on the front foot playing with a quick tempo. Sterling was particularly lively on the left hand side and he saw a lot of the ball in the early exchanges. Man City's full back found it very difficult to deal with the 16 year old former QPR player's quick feet and change of pace at times. Sterling was unlucky several times in the first half before he eventually scored, especially when he was cutting in on his right foot and placing shots to the far post. That happened twice in the first half, the first time he hit a wayward shot well wide after good trickery and the second time after a loose pass from a City centre-half Sterling picked it up out wide and placed his shot this time rather than going for power and it went inches past the far post.
Sterling turned provider after half an hour when he put Morgan through. He drilled a shot low and hard with his left foot which was beaten away and behind by the City keeper. From the resulting corner Morgan headed about a yard over. The majority of the moves we created were coming down our left-hand side and whilst Toni Silva didn't get involved too much in the first half he was still a danger whenever he was given the ball.
City defended very well in the first half until we scored. They were throwing bodies in the way of shots but they rarely threatened going forward throughout the first half. Apart from a couple of corners we dealt with them very comfortably overall and it was no surprise when Liverpool finally took the lead on the stroke of half-time with Sterling's neat finish after a good ball by Adorjan.
The Hungarian forward is a strange one from the times I have seen him. He has undoubted talent and makes things look effortless with how he can control a ball and pick a pass, but it seems at times a game can pass him by and he doesn't get involved enough when with the 4-2-3-1 formation the U18s use it should be ideally suited to get the best out of him.
He just doesn't get on the ball often enough for me and there were times today (and not for the first time whenever I have seen him so it wasn't just a one-off) when it was barely noticeable he was on the pitch. Then he would produce a good ball out of nothing as witnessed with the first goal today.
The second half started in the same vein as the first half and Silva did well to create a chance for Morgan, squaring it to him from 15 yards but the keeper saved his effort low down. Morgan was involved again on the hour mark when a through ball from Mr Consistent Conor Coady saw him make space for himself in the box and again from roughly 15 yards Morgans hard low effort hit the side netting. Morgan yet again put a real shift in up front and he is a clever player, making angles for passes in and around the box and he gets plenty of shots away during a game. His work rate across the line is commendable every time I see him play.
City were making a better game of it in the second half and upped their level of performance but while they still weren't creating anything of note they were competing more and getting tighter to our players in midfield. We were still in control generally and it was a surprise when they equalized just after the hour mark with an absolute worldy of a strike from their number 11 (I think his name was Henshaw). He brought it down on his chest roughly 25-30 yards out and volleyed it in, looping over Belford who was no way at fault as his positioning was good and the goal was literally out of nothing.
Andy from Liverweb (who I was stood with) said it was similar to one Terry Mc scored for us at Spurs in the late 70s early 80s. I think I have seen the goal in question on the many history videos we have, but an equally similar example of it would be Joe Cole's goal v Sweden in the 2006 World Cup as it was from the same distance and angle outside the box as that strike. Sometimes you just have to take your hat off as it was a fantastic goal.
It was like the goal they scored acted as a spur for us though as we went down the other end and Morgan powered into the box but a City defender cleared his shot off the line. We began to up the tempo we had showed in the early part of the game in pressing for a winner. Adorjan who I hadn't seen do anything of note until the end of the first half when he created Sterlings goal, then got Silva in with a good ball. He cut in onto his left foot from the right hand side but the keeper made a very good save at the far post. Silva also had hard luck with another shot after he had again cut in on his left foot and the shot flew inches wide.
Silva was seeing much more of the ball in the second half, he was doing what Sterling had done to great effect in the first half. Borrell likes his wide players to play on their 'wrong' side. Right footers on the left cutting in, left footers on the right doing the same. Both Sterling and Silva have made a big impression this season.
We continued to push for the winner and it nearly came not long after when a loose pass from the back by a City defender saw Silva pick the ball up centrally roughly 25 yards out. He leathered it towards the top corner but the City keeper made a great save tipping the ball over the bar. Silva saw much more of the ball in the second half but Sterling didn't enjoy anywhere near the same amount of possession he'd had before the break. They did swap sides for a bit early in the second half but then swapped back as the half went on.
We got the winner when yet again Morgan made good space for himself on the edge of the area and hit a low hard shot which flew in at the near post. He was mobbed by the other lads who all did a pile-on celebration on him in delight at the late winner.
He went off just after that for Jason Banton who a minute or so after coming on provided the funniest moment of the game when he was closing a City player down near the touchline and shouted ''BOO" to try and force him into making a mistake, much to the amusement and bewilderment of the watching crowd.
We nearly put the icing on the cake in the last minute when that man Silva yet again cut in on his left foot and had a shot palmed away by the City keeper, and Adorjan hit the post from the rebound from roughly 15 yards.
It was a deserved win for the lads and I am giving McGiveron MOTM for a solid, assured display at the back. Honourable mentions for Morgan who worked hard and scored a good goal, Sterling for his first half display and Silva for his second half display.
Team: Belford; Poor, Sama, McGiveron, Smith; Coady, Roddan; Sterling, Adorjan, Silva; Morgan (Banton):If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

From official.
David Ngog was at the double as Liverpool Reserves romped to a 4-0 friendly win over a strong Tranmere Rovers side at the Academy on Tuesday afternoon.
The Frenchman opened the scoring with a thumping 35th minute strike before Daniel Ayala and Emmanuel Mendy put the hosts out of sight in the second half.
Ngog then sealed the victory with a clinical drive late on as John McMahon's men maintained an unbeaten run that stretches as far back as October.
The Reds boss included Milan Jovanovic, Dani Pacheco, Brad Jones and Ngog in his starting XI as he looked to combat a Rovers team that boasted the experience of Alan Mahon and the highly-rated Dale Jennings.
First-team manager Kenny Dalglish was once again amongst the spectators for what looked like being an intriguing Merseyside derby of sorts and he almost saw Rovers take the lead on two minutes.
Mahon broke down the left and crossed for Lucas Akins who was left in acres of space eight yards from goal. It looked a simple task to control and finish but the striker somehow got the ball stuck under his feet. Sammy Morrow eventually bounced a shot wide after Liverpool had scrambled it to the edge of the area.
It was a let off for the hosts and they responded in the right manner as Michael Roberts fizzed a 25 yard blockbuster against the crossbar.
The midfielder certainly seemed to have his eye in and on 11 minutes he saw another effort shake the woodwork after a short corner was worked into his path.
Both sides seemed intent to attack at every opportunity and Rovers carved out a good opening four minutes later but Akins failed to find a teammate with his cut back after rounding Brad Jones.
Ngog then dragged an effort wide after good link up with Nikola Saric before Mahon crashed a well-struck shot just over Jones's bar.
With half an hour played there had been little sign of Jovanovic but the Serbia star almost had an assist to his name moments later when his weaving run and cross just missed the outstretched leg of Ngog.
The Frenchman's influence was beginning to grow as the match wore on and on 35 minutes he broke free to lash a left foot drive beyond Joe Collister to give Liverpool the lead.
The Reds had just about shaded the first period and McMahon opted to make changes at the interval with Gerardo Bruna and Suso replacing Saric and Alex Cooper respectively.
The duo gave the home side more composure in possession and on 55 minutes they doubled their advantage.
Pacheco forced a smart save out of Collister from 18 yards but from the resulting kick Ayala was on hand to bundle the ball home from close range.
It seemed to knock the fight out of the visitors and Pacheco again went close before Jovanovic drilled wide of the near post from a tight angle.
With the Reds in total control, McMahon introduced Andre Wisdom as a substitute and the highly-rated defender enjoyed a quiet run out on his first appearance since picking up a serious knee injury at the start of the season.
The one-way traffic continued and on 78 minutes a neat exchange between Bruna and Pacheco sent Ngog clear. It seemed inevitable the net would
bulge, but the striker took one touch too many and the chance went begging.
A third goal appeared to be on the cards, however, and from a right-wing corner Mendy ghosted in at the near post to glance a header into the far corner.
The away side had done little to trouble the Reds' rearguard in the second period and although they did hit the bar late on, Ngog sealed a superb display when he rifled a rising drive inside the near post from eight yards out.
Liverpool Reserves: Jones, Flanagan (Wisdom 75), Irwin, Cooper (Suso 45), Ayala (Sokolik 63), Mendy, Jovanovic, Roberts, Ngog, Saric (Bruna 45), Pacheco. Unused sub: Hansen. If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

If anyone's interested in the last 15 minutes. Just as I tuned in Robinson was being substituted, since then Ince looked quite active and the commentators said that Coady has produced the biggest share of England's quality tonight, or something like that.
EDIT: Ince also substituted, "Paul would be pleased" according to the commentators.Last edited by Daffy Duck; 08-02-11, 10:15 PM.
