None of our youth players have broken through because they haven't been good enough.Originally posted by Alex View PostI think the lad has a bright future. Unfortunatly i cant see it being at liverpool. When was the last player we brought through? Gerrard? Thats too long ago. Sad fact is that youth dosnt make it at the club anymore.
We now buy talent........Jon Jo Shelvey for example
Kelly (imo) will be good enough, he either needs to feature in 10-15 games this season with us or spend a whole season on loan at a lower PL or top Championship side.
He has all the physical attributes needed to succeed, he's versitile, he just lacks experience. The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

It all depends what position you play whether you will break through or not.
Reina is untouchable, if you were a young goalkeeper with potential you would hardly get game time with him in front of you.
Same goes for Torres, Gerrard, Johnson, Cole...
Ayala has a chance, and will make it imo, only due to Carra and the Greek getting on.
Pacheco and N'gog, possibly due to rotation with Torres - Pacheco has the advantage imo due to him being able to play in any forward position as he shown recently with Spain
Kelly, same case as Pacheco - he is very versatile.

All very true as no-one would expect a young player to oust a world class footballer with 10 plus years of experience.
Kelly, same case as Pacheco - he is very versatile.
For me though, Johnson is going to miss games with injury so personally I would like to see Kelly given a couple of games rather than buy a Degan type signing who isn't good enough to be 1st choice.
I'd like to see Pacheco given some minutes or games ahead of a Benayoun (I know he's left) or Riera (same again) or Babel. I don't neccessarily mean start a load of games but regular sub appearences coming on for Cole or Maxi or Kuyt or Jovanovich etc....
Ayala is the one who could struggle because a mistake there puts someone straight in on goal as showed in the friendly, at least if Kelly makes a mistake at full back we can still defend the cross then attempt to make the save.
Not saying I don't rate Ayala as I do and I would rather him as 4th choice than Kyriakos but centre back is a harsh position to play without experienceThe King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

I think it's more a case of positions on the pitch and situations in games. It's easier to bring on a young striker, winger or attacking midfielder etc as if they have a poor game and make mistakes they're unlikely to prove too costly, you can bring them on it tight ish games. With defenders and defensive midfielders their mistakes are likely to prove more costly, you'd be less prone to stick a young centre back on for experience at 1-0 or 2-0 than you would an attacking player.Originally posted by Mike View PostIt all depends what position you play whether you will break through or not.

Reporter: Hi Martin we'd just like to congratulate you on your recent signs of improvementOriginally posted by Reece View PostNo
I did think about putting it in there, but that thread is more for news updates rather than discussion, whereas this thread can be purely devoted to Martin. He deserves it
Kelly: Thanks
Reporter: Did you know the Mods on Est1892 are so impressed with you, they've awarded you your own thread?
Kelly: err..no?
Reporter: They've said you deserve it
Kelly: Well it's always nice to get recognition for the hard work you put in, but I'm not going to let this go to my head, it's a team game and I wouldn't have been able to get my own thread without the help of my team mates.
Reporter: Thanks Martin for your time, enjoy the momentHello mert.

We've always bought talent. It's a complete myth to pretend otherwise. We got players like Emlyn Hughes, Kevin Keegan and Ray Clemence - and many others - from other clubs in lower divisions and groomed them into top league and international players. In fact I recall very clearly Bob Paisley being interviewed in the 1970s and being asked for the secret of Liverpool's success. Paisley simply replied "we buy the best players"Originally posted by Alex View PostI think the lad has a bright future. Unfortunatly i cant see it being at liverpool. Thought he looked great last night, very composed
Very early days, and we haven't seen that much of him as yet, but I'd be happy if he was backup to Johnson and at centre halfI saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"
There's no water round here stupid, should have stayed where it was wet
