I can see there's merit in the argument. Overachieving in Europe, even though the league performance was disappointing...
Hang on though, you can say that about Benitez too.
So I can't see what's so much better about Hodgson except he's not Benitez..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

We should do a swap then.Originally posted by NigelLG View PostI don't know, we should ask the people who seem to be agreeing with this, such as the ones calling for an Englishman to replace Capello. I've had a look at the possible candidates and I've not been surprised to see Hodgson as high on that list. Would he earn that post on merit alone? Of course no, but he's English.Brandt - Keita - Van Dijk - Sessegnon

how do you work that out? when he get the job he had about 5yrs experience at boro and thats all.
Roy has managed around the globe and the premiership as well. won countless trophies of little significance and is on the uefa committee which means absoultely **** all as well

Here's some interesting info:Originally posted by NigelLG View PostI don't know, we should ask the people who seem to be agreeing with this, such as the ones calling for an Englishman to replace Capello. Last English manager to win English top flight league title: Howard Wilkinson 1991-92
Last English manager to win FA Cup: Harry Readknapp 2008, previous: Joe Royle 1995
Last English manager to win League Cup: Steve McClaren 2004, previous: Brian Little 1996
Last English manager to win a European trophy: Bobby Robson (with Barcelona) 1997
Now I'm not saying that all English managers are poor, I'm saying there are very few at the top of the game, there are perhaps a variety of reasons for this (such as it being difficult for them to get top jobs). Lets hope Roy can be a success for usThe only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I've seen that argument put forward when we appointed Roy. How great must that look on a managers' CV.Originally posted by red g View Post

Personally I was bored to the back teeth of Rafa. So much so that had he still been here I would have struggled to tune into the games this season. It felt like he'd worn me down. But as I'd mentioned before I don't know how much was Rafa or football in general. A bit of both in all reality.Originally posted by Neil Young View PostI agree about Reece of course.
Re. his original statement, the opposite is also true - it seems to me that many of those who were most critical of Benitez are the most ardent supporters of Hodgson.
Echoing Reece the ****'s point, it's hard to know what their/your optimism is based on, apart from the fact he's not Benitez.
So any new manager would have filled me with optimism. Short term at least. But Hodgson is actually a manager I really respect. In two and a half seasons he did a fantastic job at a club with a small squad and small budget. He got the best out of some seasoned pro's, ones that had been disguarded by others. So given better resources what can he achieve?
Already he represents a lot of Liverpool past, good basic values, be polite, keep matters in house and try to reassure the fans wherever possible. I prefer this style to previous ones. All I want to see now is the players playing with a smile.
Maybe he'll fail and I'll hold my hands up. But then again the odds are stacked against any manager being a success here right now. All I know is I haven't missed a minute of any of our games so far and I am looking forward to seeing the new players settle in. That'll do for me right now.Always borrow money from a pessimist. He won’t expect it back. Oscar Wilde

That technical committee stuff is funny....Roy fans always cite that as though it's evidence of his expertise.
Just like Andy Roxburgh and Gerard Houllier eh

Steve McClaren matched Hodgson's UEFA Cup achievement in leading a ****ty little club to the UEFA Cup final.
McClaren won the Dutch league with a small club, beating Ajax & PSV - that is a far, far greater achievement than winning the Elk League with FC Hurdy Gurdy or whatever it was Roy won. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

All that being said would you really want McClaren in place of Roy?Originally posted by Shaggy View Post

the only english manager that should be even looked at for england is redknapp imo.
but this is about Roy and his merits anyway
personally Rafa was killing me slowly last year and i am 150% sure that we would have been awful this year to!!!
So while we have started off abysmally again, I am hoping that once Merieles and Cole are embedded in the midfield things will start to look up, both players were choosen by roy and positive Rafa wouldnt have signed them so thats a good sign......._____________________________________
