He's certainly one of our best players ever, but not Top 3 in my lifetime. I'm prepared to slate Gerrard for being utter **** for almost all last season and probably our least effective midfielder. Whether he was sulking to get Benitez out I don't know, but his play and his attitude were just awful for a whole season. Not one of our other all-time greats has had such a **** season as he did last seasonOriginally posted by Craig_H View PostYet again, with no real evidence, people are jumping on a bandwagon and slating Gerrard. Probably our 2nd or 3rd best player ever. And people are turning on him, for no defined reason.

i love rafa and i hope he comes back.
however bringing him back too soon would bring more immediate tensions to the club than bringing in somebody else, and keep the club mired in some level of uncertainty. if we want the best out of these players, i think we need to keep roy and rafa out of the club for now.dave of mutilation

Good point and I think it will hold in almost all circumstances. Ideally I would like Rafa to be given one more shot here in 2 to 3 years time. But I think in our case, it is quite possible that the same players are regretting Rafa not being here. Not many teams go from being 2 in the league and playing the Europe's elite out of the park to being 19 and having no clue where the next goal is coming from in 18 months.Originally posted by destinydude View PostI woudln't and no one should either. It takes time for the wounds to heal and for the whole saga to be forgotten(you still have to understand that a section of the players were unhappy and that's why we had a managerial change)
The emotion and respect b/w the players and the manager won't be the same.
Somewhere down the line I'd take Rafa but not now or not in 2-3 yrs time.
It's absolute madness to call for him now esp if that comes out from your heart. I'd understand if it's an emotional appeal but in no way is it logical.
Classic case is Valencia. When Rafa left some of the players and the management were happy as they felt he was too cold, distant, hard taskmaster, unattractive football, etc etc etc. The same BS was spouted there also - they needed a manager who will let loose the shackles, arms around the shoulder etc. Six months later they were were willing to do anything to have Rafa back. One of their directors quoted that he was willing to carry Rafa on his back from Merseyside to Valencia

And Gerrard hardly stands out in term of underperforming last season.
You could probably count those who didnt, on one hand.

Would have to be less charitable and considerably more witty, too.Originally posted by Redspin View PostSomeone less charitable than I might reply that they would only ever explain anything to you in layman's terms!

I remember our Div 2 team and early Div 1, plus the Shankly wilderness years between 1966 and 1973 and we had a number of mediocre teams. But the great players in those teams - and there were a number superior to Gerrard - never played as consistently poorly for so long a period as the self-regarding Gerrard.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostI doubt they played in such a ****e performing side, either.

Also Gerrard underperformed even more than many lesser players last season, which for an all-time great is pretty poor stuff and totally inexcusable
