Roy Hodgson has insisted that he will not stand aside for Kenny Dalglish to take over as Liverpool manager and insisted it is up to New England Sports Ventures (NESV), the club’s owner, to determine whether he should be replaced by the Anfield legend.

For the second time this season, a section of the Liverpool fans chanted for Dalglish to return as manager, prompting Hodgson to admit he is powerless to prevent such public displays of dissent and warn that there are likely to be more in the months to come.

There are no indications that NESV is ready to remove Hodgson — who was in Auxerre last night watching Yann Mvila, the Rennes midfield player — from the post he accepted in July, but there is concern at Anfield about Liverpool’s struggle to steer clear of the lower reaches of the Barclays Premier League — defeat on Saturday too them back within three points of the relegation zone.

Hodgson claimed not to have heard the chants for Dalglish, who is employed as club ambassador, and he vowed to do the manager’s job to the best of his ability until and unless he is removed from the position. “You don’t deal with it, do you, when they are chanting the name of other people,” Hodgson said. “The fans can chant for whoever they want and it will be up to the club to decide what they want to do.

“There is nothing I can do about it and I can only continue to do the best job I can do under these circumstances, and if the club decide they want to give the job to somebody else then I’ll have to accept that.

“I can’t get upset every time the fans chant someone’s name and furthermore we have got a lot of fans — we have got millions and millions of fans.

“Maybe the travelling fans are just showing their frustration because they have lost and they are entitled to do that. Fans make their frustrations felt every time we lose a game, but unfortunately they may have to do that a few more times this season, because I can’t see us going through a season winning every single game.”

Roy Hodgson admitted that his future at Liverpool is out of his hands after a section of supporters responded to the lifeless 2-0 defeat at Stoke by again calling for Kenny Dalglish to return.

Although it is far from certain that the club's new American owners would turn to Dalglish, there is little doubt Hodgson's job is on the line again after second-half goals from Ricardo Fuller and Kenwyne Jones gave Stoke their first win over Liverpool in a quarter of a century.

It followed a tame draw at Wigan in midweek and Hodgson knows that another defeat by bottom-of-the-table West Ham at Anfield on Saturday could signal the end of his four-and-a-half-month reign.

Hodgson has now picked up just five points from a possible 21 away this season, and his side have scored only four goals.

He has never liked his travels - in his 105 away league games since 1980 with Bristol City, Blackburn, Fulham and Liverpool he has won only 13 times and managed just 35 draws.

To make matters worse, Glen Johnson - who was criticised by the manager last week for his poor form - hit back through his representatives on Sunday by describing Liverpool as 'boring' under Hodgson.

Stoke winger Jermaine Pennant, a Champions League finalist with Liverpool more than three years ago, insisted that some of the current Anfield squad are simply not good enough.

He said: 'The fans want to see the old Liverpool back, but it's not as easy as that. They expect to win everything but it's hard living on the past.

'It's probably a lack of confidence, but you look at the team and they do need to get strength in certain areas.

This will surely come to a head soon, and that will most likely mean Hodgson leaving. But what do we want? Do we want to see Dalglish brought in? Do we want to see another caretaker come in? Do we want to limit ourselves to appointing one of the few decent managers around at this time of year?

this is a great article. I reckon the media are slowly switching on to the fact that Roys an abject failure.

Best stat of ghe night: out of 105 premier league away games Roy has won 13, the same amount we won in 08/09. Staggering.

He 'promised' 4th because Liverpool should always aim for at least 4th (4th isn't good enough even!), unlike Hodgson who thinks we're relegation fodder.

I think it's a bit simplistic to suggest he was sacked because he 'promised' 4th place. It would have been an insult if he said we couldn't finish 4th, and to be fair to him, we competed for 4th till the end.

But hey ho, I don't want to go into a Rafa debate.
