Slightly off topic but am in the only one who thinks fergie is a bit overated? And not just as I'm a pool fan.
Did well in the Scottish league in the 80's (not too impressive) and then had the same job in the same league with the same team who out spent everyone until Chelsea came along for a solid 25 years!!

Liverpool may have their saviour in Platini

While Liverpool were imagining that some of the world’s most successful and lauded players — Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard — could be incorporated in a sustainable challenge for the trophies to which history seemed to entitle the club, everything was fine. The dream was lived.

Then it was discovered that the new stadium promised by Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr was a myth: Liverpool could not even afford the proverbial spade.

Pretty much all the difficulty that Liverpool and their supporters have experienced lately can be traced back to sums that don’t add up. When I asked whom they would like to replace Roy Hodgson during one of the manager’s umpteen crises in seven months — it’s been quite a redefinition of the phrase “a fair chance” — quite a few fans got all sniffy about José Mourinho, expressing aversion to his attitude or style of play. So they were never going to accept Hodgson.

This week, as the list of Hodgson’s crimes against humanity mounted, he was accused of having replaced Javier Mascherano with Christian Poulsen, as if the Argentinian could have been persuaded to forsake Barcelona. He was scorned for inflicting Paul Konchesky on the Kop, as if a Paolo Maldini or Roberto Carlos would have gratefully accepted the former Fulham left back’s wages.

It is all too reminiscent of Francis Lee’s remark about the salary expectations of an underachieving Manchester City squad: “Their trouble is that they’ve got Frank Sinatra tastes and Frank Ifield voices.”

No slight is intended on Ifield — or my friend Hodgson. But an alarming proportion of Liverpool supporters do want to fly to the Moon for a Mersey-ferry fare. And the new fans — those who have probably never seen a Liverpool captain brandish an English championship trophy — have expectations as high as, if not higher than, those who know what they are talking about.

This is not to deny that Liverpool are a special club or to pretend that there was not a distinct pleasure in the Rafael Benítez years of contesting Champions League finals with AC Milan. The red shirts seemed to belong on those occasions, Jamie Carragher’s heroics in 2005 being just as memorable as Maldini’s redemption two years later. But if time and tide waited for every man, Stade Reims would be regular participants in Champions League finals, too.

Which brings us neatly to the Frenchman who has given Liverpool hope of remaining special. Without Michel Platini and the reform of the Uefa club licensing system known as Financial Fair Play, Liverpool might still be in the despairing hands of Hicks and Gillett. John W. Henry and Tom Werner, the new owners, made that clear when they took over.

Progress on the regulations, due to be operational from the 2013-14 season, is to be reported by Platini, the Uefa president, and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the chairman of the European Club Association, on Tuesday. They are popular with owners because, by encouraging clubs to break even or run at a limited loss, they should halt the rampant inflation in player salaries and transfer fees caused by clubs such as Manchester City, and before them Chelsea, acquiring sugar daddies.

No longer do you hear that they are a fiendish plot by the likes of Platini and Rummenigge, a Franco-German alliance bent on curbing English power in Europe; that was fanciful. Indeed, the Premier League is taking a constructive part in their design.
But it is still legitimately argued that Uefa must be careful not to enshrine the prominence of traditionally strong clubs: Spain’s big two, for instance, and Manchester United, with their large stadium and earning potential. There must be room to grow and challenge the established order, as Chelsea have done in England.

There must also be, however, an incentive for responsible owners to try to revive great institutions in danger of failing and there could be no better example of this than Liverpool if Henry and Werner succeed in exploiting the club’s support, without whose scale and loyalty they would hardly have bothered crossing the Atlantic, Financial Fair Play or not.

The status quo was never an option. Inflation was tempting clubs with heritage-based ambition, such as Aston Villa and Everton, towards the debt-rutted road on which Leeds United nearly foundered. Something had to be done and Platini did it.

There is a fear of devil in the detail, a worry — exacerbated by Platini’s recent reference to “threats on various fronts” — that big clubs faced by a more level playing field might lead a breakaway from Uefa. But even this has receded, so better times may lie ahead for all, Liverpool now included.

There's plenty of people coming on here at the moment claiming there's no difference between NESV and H+G or that they're cunts or that they're incompetent when the only known fact is that we have a **** manager.

Everyone agrees on that but the idea that you just sack him with zero potential negative consequences is nuts. And people are totally overreacting - and I think it's all understandable - because when you're stuck in the middle of it all time seems to move very slowly but it was short-term thinking that got us Hodgson to begin with. None of us have been here before with Liverpool so the impatience is understandable but it IS impatience and a certain amount of gullibility regarding the media which is only exacerbated by expecting to find out decisions that will make/lose millions on twitter first!

I know that Hodgson's statisitcs are damning and his realistic record is sub-standard but clearly NESV aren't the type to go all out for the likes of Mourinho midseason if everand a couple more days - surely!!! - won't make that much of a difference. I don't think the match against the scum is particularly significant in the context of our entire future. We've lost against Wolves and ****in Blackpool at home for ****s sake!

I do think they are fluffing the decision with regards to sacking Roy and I do think their ditherring will cost them support amongst the fans

In running companies you rarely have the luxury of making decisions when all the stars have aligned. You often have to make decisions when the time isnt great

IMO NESV are looking at this too much with their heads. Sometimes decisions have to be made on gut instinct or feeling. I've walked away from lucrative deal for my business because they didnt feel right and I've gone with things that have had an element of risk based on gut instinct

I have to agree, i like the fact that NESV are not panicking in public or making some rash snap decision. They are handling this in a pre H&G in private manner which is how it should be.
A large number of people seem to have condemned them already for being slow to react but they have made no comments on the situation & are handling it in house.
There is no point firing him without a plan in place, if you want quick, unplanned, public grandstanding decision ask for fat Tom hicks back and you'll have your man

Looking from the outside with no knowledge of what's going on, it can look like indecision. The truth is that we don't know whether they are doing anything or whether they have a well developed plan and about to enact it.

They are intelligent people with knowledge of running sports business and I'm certain they know the situation is unsustainable.

Past players have been supportive of Hodgson and I'm sure that has influenced them. I think it's telling that Thommo has come off the fence and even Alan Kennedy whilst still somewhat supportive has said he expects action next week.
