It started off as a means of not being spotted...it's easier to blend in with non-football fans and pretend you have **** all to do with the football, then it became fashionable in the 70s to wear all the labels, which became a kind of uniform for 'casuals', and that was that.

Nowadays there's a sort of unwritten rule - you don't hit a 'scarfer', i.e. anyone in colours. Doesn't always work though.

Sorry Shaggy, not sure of the reference there.

There's plenty of drunken punch-ups in Oz, but not really much in the way of large mob violence/football riots that you can easily get sucked into. We're a little more independent with our violence.

There's been large scale disorder at the Australian Open for the last few years. I understand it's between Aussies of Croatian and Serbian descent.

I always considered them to be more indiscriminate than that.

I guess its the premeditated nature of the ultra's behaviour that I find wierd. I guess that they get a bit of a rush out of it and there's safety in numbers. I also imagine though that a lot of these guys are ****ing pussies when it comes to going toe-to-toe with someone on their own.

Yeah they tend to get into fights in every sport at every level in Australia (generalisation), not sure if its the same overseas... In general I think mob violence at sporting events is not as large scale as some of the European stuff...

Like I said, it doesn't always work out like that but that is the so-called golden rule. They're right ****s aren't they

There frequently used to be riots (and worse) at tennis matches between Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin. It was a Flem/Walloon thing. They hate each other. It's effectively a continuous, low-level civil war - atrocities, waffle-throwing, the lot.

The irony is that Clijsters and Henin apparently get on very well.
                    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

To me its like a childish jealous tribalism where people can't shrugg off a bad result or just ignore the taunts of others (or avoid making them themselves). I guess regional identity comes into it too, but the Aussie view of European football violence is of losers with nothing better to do with their saturday afternoon than get in a fight after/before a footy match.
IMO it merely mirrors the behaviour of the idiots on the pitch which is why whilst I love my footie I'm quite pleased that my kids are getting more involved in rugby.

Ah yes. The worst football violence i've seen in oz was also a Serb-Croat thing. That's just outright ethnic hatred which is definitely not isolated to Australia.

opening a can of worms here

Naff....kinda like a bit tacky, cheap etc. But it's also an age thing, i'm 31. When i was 18, i wore LFC shirts a lot. Last kinda 6 years or so, not so much.

Yeah I tend to only wear my jerseys (of which I have a **** load) when I am playing with mates, training for my 11-a-side team or going to games. So most of mine barely end up getting worn... Its not fashionable to wear a jersey around in general. Although a fair few people wear LFC jerseys at uni. Its easily the most common shirt worn...
