Roy Hodgson felt his side paid the price for their recent exertions as they produced what he described as a 'tired' performance in the 1-1 draw at Wigan

The Reds had looked set to extend their winning run to five matches when Fernando Torres fired home a brilliant opener on six minutes.

However, the home side recovered to level through Hugo Rodallega, leaving the boss frustrated by his team's second-half showing.

"We didn't deserve to win the game," he told his post-match press conference.

"We looked tired today and I don't think our passing was anywhere near as good as we expected it to be. We had a bright start and a bright finish but for a long period in between we weren't anywhere near where I would expect us to be. I think we can be more than happy with the point we got from the game."

He added: "It was a wonderful piece of play from two outstanding players for our goal. It was a marvellous pass and wonderful finish that put us on the front foot. But we didn't capitalise on that. Even though we had a spell when we were pretty much in control, there were also long periods, especially from the start of the second half, where we just invited Wigan on to us.

"We consistently gave the ball away and as a result they took advantage and equalised. We did better towards the end and were perhaps a little bit unlucky with Steven's (Gerrard) shot that hit the underside of the crossbar, but it would have been harsh on Wigan had we won it."

Asked why he felt his side had failed to produce a similar display to the one that saw off Chelsea, Hodgson added: "I'd put that down to Napoli, Blackburn, Bolton and Chelsea - all with a small squad of players.

"We have five injuries at the moment. We finished the game with Martin Kelly, Jonjo Shelvey and Nathan Eccleston. That's what we have at the moment. Hopefully we will get some players back soon.

"Johnson's not fit. I overestimated his short training session and underestimated what would happen after it the following day, so he wasn't fit.

"Now we have to work hard to get players back in the right physical and mental frame of mind for another tough test at Stoke.

"We knew this game would be difficult because Wigan are not a bad side at all. They haven't had a good start themselves and showed they are a good football team on many occasions this evening."

The boss was also quizzed by journalist about his decision to substitute Raul Meireles at half-time.

Hodgson explained: "He was sick. I don't know how long it will take for him to recover. He felt ill just before the game in the warm up. He wanted to play and got through the first half but at half-time he was sick again, so there was no option."
    Are we winning?

Not defending that performance, but I fully expected it. In the predictions thread my foresight gazing arse told me it would be 1-1 (check it out).

      Reasons:
      1) Roy's away voohoodoo, temporarily broken but doubts lingered. Proven tonight. Hopefully he's still learning and improving.
      2) We played a "champions league game" a few days ago against Chelsea. The likes of Kuyt, Torres, Gerrard, Maxi and Lucas were magnificent. They were bound to be lethargic tonight. Proven.
      3) Roy adopted a 'low energy' game and stuck to it. Wigan adopted a killer mentality, reserved for top 4 sides. We should treat it as a compliment.

Hopefully next game we'll be playing better. Must admit the substitutions were cack but Roy was afraid to lose. So meh. Long way to go in the season and manure drew with City thus leaving that 4th spot wide open still. That's my Yellow Hat thinking anyway.
      One tit for another.

The Poulsen substitution was just crazy, why did we bring him on
To be fair to Eccleston he didnt get much time. But I was totally shocked with how poor Shelvey was. Couldn't make a simple five yard pass and was very slow. Some really poor performances all over the pitch. Konchesky went missing a lot, Maxi and Kuyt did nothing. Meireles, another great white hope, was completely off his game. Kelly seemed very nervous. Only Lucas, Pepe and Nando come out with any credit. Could have easily lost that.

i have a little sympathy for roy, having had huge troubles juggling my squad in fm 2011, even with 5 signings (and about 5 outgoing players as well--and my new signings have all played in uefa in the fall and are ineligible...)

got to where i had to play bayern with only pacheco up front and lucas sent off in the 20th.

we went down by 2 before halftime. still down by two in the last 20 minutes.

but we won, 3-2 at the end, because i only went and ****ing managed the team. took some hard decisions, but even i'm better than roy at this management lark. it's proven now.

It is Roy's own fault that we don't have a bigger squad.
Why loan out Aquilani and Insua for free?

Good point, players in by Roy all over 28, big wages no big re-sale value (NESV take note) all have failed to do anything meaningful imo. Players out on loan all young and could have put in a better performance then any of roy's signing even if they played to their own levels of last year.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you (like me) suspect that Purslow was influential in those moves? I hold Roy culpable for the moves in that haven't paid off (particularly Poulsen and Konchesky) and his poor tactics but I suspect he didn't have an entirely free hand with all the moves that went on.

To be fair he's not blaming the young players he's saying the squad isn't big enough.

I said that Purslow probably was influental but Roy as the manager must have the final word about all players leaving.

If he didn't secure that he got the final word in all transfers when he signed then he shouldn't have signed for us in the first place knowing how important that is with Purslow in charge.

Not trying to defend him but perhaps that wasn't down to him in that to bring someone in he had to let someone go, whether it was the right decision in who he let go and who in brought in, well that's another story.

He clearly blames them. He could have named players like Poulsen and Konchesky but he always names young players.

Jesus Christ, I should have been surprised by that, but the fact that I'm not is all the more disappointing. As soon as Torres scored I thought, ****e that's game over - Roy is going to be cynical and we're not going to play a minute of football from that moment on. And unfortunately I couldn't have been more right.

Outplayed by Wigan, what a disgrace.

Out played but two great chances for Gerrard to win it. The first at 1-0 after some great build up play when he knocks it over the bar from about 10 yards and the second when clean through on the angle. On another day we could have won.

It should also be saifmd that the passing was a disgrace at times. Hard for any system to work when the players can't pass.

However. Once again Roys negative tactics have cost us. Sitting deep and allowing Wigan back into the game. As for his substitutions....... What has Shelvey done to warrant being brought on for the ill Meireles? Why not bring Ngog on and put Kuyt on the right. Then when Kuyt tired, instead of Poulsen bring on Jovanovic.

I know Jova hasn't started well, but neither has Poulsen ffs and at least he keeps the balance of the team right and gives us a chance of creating something. All in all poor tactics and poor substitutions. Lucky not to lose the game.
                                Forwards.......
