I think talk of winning the league would take the word 'optimistic' to all new levels, but you mentioned after last nights performance that fourth could be 'there or thereabouts'. There was an obvious disclaimer after that, but there was an air of optimism in your post following a very good performance against a weak time. Much like there was an air of pessimism after we 'only' won 1-0 at their place and we were lucky with that.

I think there was a lot of space behind our advanced full-backs and our back line at times, with the midfield still learning when to cover; a better team (of Premiership standard) would exploit that and I think there will be teething problems as we revert back to zonal marking.

I think we're going to concede a fair few goals this season and it will be a matter of how clinical we are going forward. I'm thinking sixth this season, with a fall away from a challenge for fourth around Easter, with plenty of high-scoring games and some classics thrown in for good measure.

Surely with the world class spine to our team, 4th should not be considered as wildly optimistic? We have underperformed in recent years and should easily be challenging for top four with the players we have.

Probably, but a team with Pepe, Agger, Johnson, Lucas, Gerrard and Suarez should be challenging for titles, not worrying about 4th place.

If we can keep those players fit for the majority of the season then I don't think we are as far off as some people believe and 4th place shouldn't be some pipe dream.
