It might have escaped the notice of some Liverpool fans, but Reds co-owner John W Henry has been a very busy man in transfer market over the last week or so. I must point it however, not in football but in baseball. The Boston Red Sox have made two significant trades in the past week to ensure they have a better 2011, but the cost of their two signings will amount to no less than $300million over seven years.
Last Monday it was formally announced that first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (pictured right alongside Theo Epstein) was traded from the San Diego Padres to the Boston Red Sox which sees four young prospects, including outfielder Reymond Fuentes, right-hander Casey Kelly and first baseman Anthony Rizzo, moving in the other direction. On top of that, multiple sources believe that Gonzalez will sign a contract rumoured to be worth $154 million over seven years.

The Reds Sox were not done there though, and two days later, they signed Carl Crawford from the Tampa Bay Rays, which will see the outfielder get an estimated $142million over seven years.

It is a big commitment from the Boston Red Sox and although the Baseball team do have the second largest turnover in the MLB, it does indicate that John W Henry and the Fenway Sports Group are willing to pay out large amounts for players in the prime of their careers.

While Gonzalez has been an all star selection in the last three years, Crawford has been a selection in three of the last four years.

Many Liverpool fans will be hoping that such a policy will be translated to the Reds in the near future. One word of caution though, let’s hope that Henry’s big spending Red Sox do not have any affect on the business that Liverpool do in the near future.

I am fairly confident though that such outlays in Boston will not affect the Reds as for one, although the contracts for both Gonzalez and Crawford are large, they are spread over seven years and will cost roughly $42million annually. With the Red Sox turnover as large as it is, second only to the giant New York Yankees, such trades should be sustainable.

In this regard, the same sort of strategy maybe used with Liverpool FC, with Henry and co explaining that the Reds need to boost worldwide commercial sales and boost turnover to match Manchester United and the rest of football’s biggest clubs.
This will however take some years, and the prospect of signing players for big fees and on big contracts doesn’t seem to me to be immediately likely.

Patience will certainly be needed with the Fenway Sports Group to build the Reds into anything like they have built with the Boston Red Sox.

Hopefully however, over a certain amount of time, they can build Liverpool’s commercial and corporate interests, and re-introduce these profits into the club, making transfers of the likes of Gonzalez and Crawford a more realistic possibility in the not too distant future for Liverpool.

If they do happy days, but i don't think thats going to happen in January.

For the likes of Craigy pie who thinks theres no reason why we can't get the likes of Aguero,Coentrao etc wake the **** up. The name Liverpool FC means nothing these days to the elite players. Players want to play at the highest level and win trophies, at the moment we can offer neither, we live on our past glories and the name Liverpool FC only gets you so far in the transfer market these days.

Just because i mention the likes of Cahill & Nzogbia doesn't mean i wouldn't like some world class talent, i'm just being realistic, FFS Blackpool are level on points with us with a game in hand!!!!

People need to get their heads out of the clouds and come back down to earth, we cannot attract the very best players in our current situation. Come January i expect us to get in some decent players, please god they'll improve out first team and squad but i'm not expecting any world class buys for quite some time. We can all throw out of list of top class buys and post our ideal Liverpool dream team but it ain't gonna happen, be it negative or realistic this is were we are at.

This is all based on your opinion - for instance - if you were approached by LFC explaining these are the changes that are happening, this is our vision of where we expect to get to and we see you a central figure to get us there alongside XYZ - I think you'll find that LFC has more than enough pull to get the players we want here.

LFC is a huge job and with the right backing there are several managers that would love the crack at knocking Manure of their perch and lots of players that would love to be part of the side that put us in that position.

IT would be like City when they first got money and were being turned down by Kaka etc because they were only in the Europa and were not a force, they were forced to sign the likes of Bellamy and Wright Phillips then gradually build there way up to buy some good players.

NESV need to follow blackburns owners initiative

Blackburn's under-fire owners have sensationally claimed that Sam Allardyce was booted out because they want a top-four finish

                      Bring Rafa Back

He is an outstanding World Class Manager - an absolutely committed performer who has achieved in 'our' business and who believes in us. If FSG are the thinking people we want them to be - it should be a no brainer - alll they have to do is manage him - he can manage for us

If Rafa was offered the job and accepted it then I'd be delighted. I have huge reservations he'd come back due to no longer having as much say as he had before.

And he was very outspoken at Valencia and even more so at LFC. I think Rafa may be a managerial appointment that could prove more hassle than it's worth.

Certain players in the squad I'm sure all ready have a negative opinion on him. Certain fans also have negative views on him. Certain elements of the media have also made their mind up on him. People would also expect Rafa to get us right back on track, when in fairness he couldn't do it last season with a better squad (Roy has ruined it).

I think we have to take into account who else we could get before giving Rafa the job. A new, fresh manager would likely be a better bet. But of course this time, we have to actually make sure we get a manager with a bright future, as opposed to a dinosaur like Roy.

unfortunately those 3 are not going to wait 3 years until we're 'competitive' again.

the biggest question is who do you trust to rebuild this liverpool side into one that can challenge for the title ?

the only person i trust is rafa.

To my mind Rafa checks all the boxes in terms of what we've seen from NESV.

He's statistic mad. He Lives breathes football. He studies reports on opposition and sets up accordingly. And I bet he'd have read Moneyball way before anyone here knew it existed.

He takes undervalued players and sells them on at a profit. Which is pretty much what Comolli is all about. So I think he'd fit in there.

He has a winning mentality. He rotates the squad to keep it fresh. He doesn't take **** on the chin from anyone.

                          And he gets us.

                          He'll do for me.

I am not sure Rafa would want to work with a director of football type in the Prem though. In addition Comolli would likely have to conform to Rafa's ideas, which is something he may not like.

Someone who's knowledgeable in baseball, is this like us signing the likes of Aguero,Turan,Hazard etc. Someone of that high calibre.

I think we will need to wait for the Summer transfer window to really get an idea of what NESV are willing to spend. I will start to make judgement on them at the beginning of next season, if we've lost Torres, Reina, Gerrard, Agger etc, I will expect them to be replaced by players of at the very least the same ability. And not settling for Brad Jones, Clint Dempsey, Carlton Cole etc.
The times they are a changin'.
