Plus a header would have drawn unwanted attention to your face But seriously, I have always wanted to catch a ball which has come into the crowd... And then do a runner!

So this was Bolton and Coyle's style of play? Can't say I was too impressed with either if truth be told. I know it was just one game, but blimey have we been bad this season to allow Bolton, even with Coyle, to be above us.

Was just flicking through the guardian chalkboard from the bolton game... Agger didn't give away 1 foul the whole game! That is how it should be from the back. His passing rate was around 70% which isn't great but most of the failed passes occured over half way which is key to our success. If he looses the ball at least he won't loose it in our own half and he isn't just hoofing it so it comes straight back. He really is so important to us, hopefully he can stay injury free because he really is the best defender at the club.

They were way under-strength with loads of their strongest XI missing. Bolton can't afford to carry so many absentees.

That said, the fact Hodgson has done a league double over him is a terrible stain on Coyle's CV.

When you play central midfield then it is a must that it is safety first. When he played higher up the pitch as the second striker then he didn't had the same defensive responsibility. Then he could make more high risk passes.

It is his job when he play central midfield to play safety first. It is his job when he play second striker to play a more high risk game.

It is all down to the position he play in.

If you give central midfielders the freedom to make many high risk passes then you will also let in a lot more goals thanks to quick counter attacks and you will also get less ball possession.

You can only make high risk passes as a central midfielder when you think you have a great chance to make it. If you don't then it must be the short pass to a team mate.

From what I saw and from what I read on the chalkboard it seemed like we were almost playing with a diamond in midfield with Agger stepping into midfield with the ball, enabling gerrard to move higher up the pitch and play the types of balls like the one torres scored from.

Bit of a compulsive lurker, but I couldn't resist this one! How many "high risk" passes is it possible to have a "great chance to make it"! By definition anything that is "high risk" carries a fairly low chance of being successful.
And anyway, I would rather we try to score more than we let in, rather than trying to let in fewer than we score! I vote for more high risk. Better than watching a team of Ray Wilkins clones.

                      Well said Calva!

                      @ Arn

if you want to win games you have to take risks. Of course though it's knowing when to take risks. If you are short at the back you don't try crazy cross field balls for example that could be intercepted.

But it was a safety first passing style of Masch and Lucas last year that cost us 4th under Rafa. A balance is always needed.

                        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Can see why you could'nt resist that one.

Arn seems to have constructed a sentence that's a contradiction in terms there. Only play High risk if it's safe..hmmm, Arn..god love ya.

Cant tow the line on this one, Arns got a point, remember he is talking about high risk passes from a high risk position in this case cm.

Gerrard was awesome yesterday but we always looked like we could concede at any time.

Stevie should play off Torres as second striker to make the most of his pace, power and eye for goals/assists. Personally I would bring back Aquiliani to challenge Meireles for the second midfield spot.
