It would be interesting to compare the average points after this many games in the season to previous years. We'd have quite a good idea if the points really are lower comparatively then.

Ratios last season:this season
Total games played 252:254
Total points 690:688
Average points per game for a top 6 club 1.93:1.83
The number of points picked over the whole league is about the same as last year but the number of points per game picked up by the top 6 clubs is ~0.1 points per game less, meaning that the points are more evenly spread over the league than last year and that a top 6 club is on average 2.6 points worse off than they were at this stage last year.

Based on that at the current rate the 4th placed team will get 64.3 points. Im quite confident that 65-67 points would clinch 4th.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostBased on table from Feb 10th 2010 and the current table (as of last night)

The next 3 games are vital with Spurs having 3 tough games, we can really turn the screw.

I think 65-67 is probably going to be about right, I worry about our Goal difference though (Chelsea have a GD of +24 while we have a GD of +3) so we might need an extra point.Originally posted by magicalbarnes View PostBased on that at the current rate the 4th placed team will get 64.3 points. I think if we win every game we'll get it as that would be 74 points. But that's not going to happen. Drawing three games gives us 68 points, but even that is a tough ask when we still have to play Arsenal, Sunderland and Villa away, as well as Man Utd, Man City and Spurs at home. Any normal season and a draw in those particular fixtures wouldn't be the worst result (although not acceptable drawing all of course). That shows you just how tough an ask it will be.
Not forgetting we also have to brush aside the other teams we have to play, which this season we have shown prior to Kenny taking over we have not really been capable of doing so.
But my last though is this: It's great just to be even thinking about this and comparing results and fixtures.Forwards.......

Our goal difference is bad, but for us to catch Chelsea we need them to slip up and us to win virtually all our games, so naturally our GD would improve. We'd have to thrash a good few teams along the way but games like Wigan at home, sometimes a tough nut to crack Wigan, but if we get a couple of early goals the floodgates could well open.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI worry about our Goal difference though (Chelsea have a GD of +24 while we have a GD of +3) so we might need an extra point.Forwards.......

Villa away is the last game of the season, they will be guaranteed safety well before then and will have nothing to play for.Originally posted by DannyMan2006 View PostI think if we win every game we'll get it as that would be 74 points. I can see the mancs getting a win and a draw against chelsea and I also think that chelsea will panic and drop some more points, we also have to worry about spurs dropping points and I think / hope that they do as well
same as dannyman I'm made up to be thinking like this, over Christmas I had next to zero interest in football
