I think they ****ed up this competition with the leagues like the CL. It's just in the pursuit of more money, nothing to do with inclusion.

They messed the UEFA cup up in multiple ways. Firstly, including 4 teams from the major leagues in the CL made quailifying for the B competition seem like very second-rate. Even when they consolidated the Cup Winner's Cup into the UEFA it didn't make things better as often cup-winners qualify for the expanded CL through their leagues. Then the thing with the teams that come 3rd in the CL leagues dropping into it was such a bad idea, again it devalues the competition because although it brings some "bigger name" clubs into it, they usally can't be arsed and it just seems like a consolation cup, while being very unfair on those who've been in it from the start. Then the final nail in the coffin was the stupid Europa League thing, a straight knockout makes sense, silly leagues are just silly.

20 years ago the UEFA cup was a major competition and a genuinely valid one to win. Now it just seems like the Carling Cup of European football, that's a real shame.

i dont think it is anything but a second rate european competition. however its worth winning for us this season

and **** how steep is that stand.

Totally and personally it should be canceled. That said it is the only hope for a silverware this year so we should go for it. Trophy is a trophy after all.

Let's not pretend otherwise, the Europa League is a pretty **** competition. The division two of European football. Seems more mickey mouse due to all of the recent changes/rebranding etc. I guess it's less embarrassing to win the competition than it is to suffer the indignity of playing on Channel 5 getting knocked out by second rate opposition from Eastern Europe.

Maybe, they've messed with it to much, but personally i'd rank it higher than the Carling Cup. Someone said it at the same level as the FA CUP and i'd agree with that.

European football is not jsut about the continent's elite clubs, and this comp gives a chance to some perhaps a bit smaller clubs to feel part of that european glory, and to have a bit of an earner.

What would make this competition even better would be that the CL would be restiricted to league champions, and perhaps the 2nd team from the top leagues, and lower ranked clubs would play the europa leauge.

and i like the format of it now, it's not the CL but still fun to watch.

i don't get that. again european football is not just about that elite 15 or 20 clubs, it's much, much more than that, and why take away from clubs like villareal, rangers, us and chelsea next year, the chance to win a european trophy?

To say that we should field a weakened team and not care that much about the EL is bull****.

You only need to look at what now happened with Italy to learn the lesson that you should always try and win in Europe.

From the 2012/13 season Germany will now have four CL places and Italy three. Bundesliga is now ranked higher than Serie A thanks to better results in the CL and EL.

If you field a weakened team then it could come back and haunt you later. To say that a lot of clubs are now pissed off because of clubs that fielded weakened teams, like Napoli, is an understatement.
