Liverpool owners John W Henry and Tom Werner open talks with Kenny Dalglish over full-time contract

Liverpool's owners have opened talks with Kenny Dalglish about offering the caretaker manager the position on a permanent basis.

By Rory Smith 11:00PM GMT 18 Mar 2011

John W Henry and Tom Werner, principal backers of the Fenway Sports Group consortium which owns the club, arrived on Merseyside on Thursday and, despite watching Liverpool's limp elimination from the Europa League at the hands of Braga, formally started negotiations with Dalglish on Friday over a two-year deal.

The 59 year-old, who replaced Roy Hodgson in January, is believed to want a four-year deal, but is unlikely to reject a post he has craved since calling time on his first spell at Anfield in 1991.

Dalglish has required just 14 games – of which he has lost four – to convince Henry and Werner that he is the man to whom they should entrust the task of rebuilding the club, which is testament to how quickly and efficiently he has stabilised Anfield after 18 months of chaos.

When FSG arrived at Anfield in October, buying the club for £300 million and ending the unhappy reign of Tom Hicks and George Gillett, they favoured replacing Hodgson at the end of their first campaign with a young manager, used to working under a sporting director, around whom they could build a new dynasty.

Hodgson's failure to arrest Liverpool's early-season slide led to his departure, so Dalglish was initially appointed purely to ensure the club ended the season in relative calm. The master plan remained the same.

The search for the right candidate to replace the Scot continued, with FSG examining the credentials of a number of European managers. Andre Villas-Boas, of FC Porto, Jurgen Klopp, who has guided Borussia Dortmund to the top of the Bundesliga, and Marseille's Didier Deschamps are all known to have been considered.

But, despite lingering concerns over how viable a prospect he is in the long term – as evidenced by the length of the contract on offer – it has become increasingly clear to FSG that dismissing Dalglish was simply not an option.

The Scot has overseen victories over both Manchester United and Chelsea, while Liverpool's form has been such that a top-six finish seems guaranteed, though the vagaries of the FA Cup draw means that they may miss out on a place in Europe for the first time in more than a decade.

FSG had hoped to wait for as long as possible before confirming Dalglish's appointment – as well as that of his first-team coach, Steve Clarke – but Henry and Werner recognise the need to act quickly if they are to rebuild the playing squad this summer.

After overseeing the recruitment of Luis Suárez and Andy Carroll on transfer deadline day – effectively spending the money raised by the sales of Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel – FSG are expected to sanction a substantial foray into the transfer market this summer.

That will be shaped by Dalglish's wishes, though he will have to work alongside director of football strategy Damien Comolli as he looks to reshape his squad with as many as six new faces.

The Frenchman, appointed to oversee recruitment, will need to live up to the reputation that brought him to Anfield if he is to attract top-class talent to a team who may not be able even to offer the enticement of European football.

However, goalkeeper Pepe Reina is yet to admit defeat in the chase to return to continental combat, which used to be regarded as routine at Anfield.

"There are still nine games to play and we still have a chance of getting that fifth position," said the Spaniard.

"There's no doubt it's difficult with no Europe, because we are so used to watching Liverpool in midweek and those European nights at Anfield are really famous."

If Mourinho becomes available I think Henry should go all out to get him, and with Steve Clarke already there its set up for him. Give Jose the brief to put the club back on top of Europe, whatever it takes.
Jose will not (if he becomes available) come unless he has the full control and the abundance of money to spend, which may or may not happen.

I personally would be more attracted to consider either few younger ones like Klopp, Villa or more experienced like Van Gaal or Hiddink in addition to Kenny.

I think Kenny has done as good job or better than it was expected given the circumstances and certainly deserves a fair chance to say at least.

Even if Mourinho had the dosh to spend and full control, i still don't think he'd manage LFC. I can't see it ever happening tbh.

Anyway, it's expected he'll be at Madrid for at least one more season

            TBH neither do I.

It would be an interesting challenge though and the true test of his managerial skills.

well i suppose the point is that they want it sorted ready for the summer.

perhaps they are happy with what they have seen and believe a period of stability would be good

Unfortunately £50m is not a huge amount these days (look at our two new forwards). £50m would not get us close

Let's be honest, there are no suprises to come from Kenny now. You either think he's good enough or you don't. I think we've been suspect at times under him, but with a squad lacking in key areas then it's difficult to have expected more concistencey.

I think there are a few managers out there who could get us back in the top 4 if they were bankrolled to a decent amount. I think Kenny is one of those managers.

I think another key question to ask is this: Have the owners already asked other candidates and been turned down? That is possible. I think Villas Boas wants to take Porto into the CL, Klopp likely the same. Deschamps wants to take Marseille into the new stadium they have planned. Who does that leave?

Mourinho is unlikely since we are not a team who can compete for top honours, which Jose thrives on. Van Gaal I like but is he a better option than Kenny? I'm not so sure.

For me, Kenny is likely the stand out candidate.

Dalglish in no hurry to pin down Anfield future

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will be happy to leave his contract talks until the time is right after guiding the club to another Barclays Premier League victory.

The Reds took their tally under the Scot to 20 points from 10 league games with a 2-0 win at Sunderland which left them four points adrift of fifth-placed Tottenham, who have a game in hand.

They did so amid much speculation over Dalglish's future, but he is remaining relaxed as he plots the way forward on the pitch.

He said: "As regards the job, I have seen in the papers I have asked for four years. Well, I don't know who I asked.

"I saw that I was offered two (years) - I don't know who sent that in.

"Somebody said have I spoken to the owners - of course you speak to the owners, you speak to them regularly during the week.

"It's their club and they are fantastic owners and they are very supportive owners.

"But there have been no detailed discussions about next season, so until there is something that's to be said, we cannot make it up.

"Until there's something to be said, there's nothing.

"For me, that's not a problem. The football club has always been the most important thing bar one instance (the 1989 Hillsborough disaster), and that's why I left the job the last time.

"I don't have a problem. There is no pressure on anyone. I don't have a problem if it is in the best interests of the football club."

The case for Dalglish to be handed the job on a permanent basis was only strengthened at the Stadium of Light as his side banked another three points.

On an afternoon Sunderland will want to forget in a hurry, little went right for them with Sulley Muntari and Kieran Richardson limping off before the game was 23 minutes old.

However, things were to get much, much worse before long as John Mensah's error allowed Jay Spearing to race towards the box.

The Ghana international tripped Spearing and referee Kevin Friend blew straight away, and after consulting assistant Billy Smallwood, pointed to the spot despite replays suggesting contact had taken place outside the area.

Mensah, who would later be dismissed for a professional foul on Luis Suarez, was booked before Dirk Kuyt calmly dispatched the penalty to give his side a 33rd-minute lead.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who had earlier pulled off a good save to deny Kuyt, then denied Suarez and Spearing either side of half-time, but the Uruguay international secured victory with a powerfully-struck second 13 minutes from time.

The Black Cats enjoyed plenty of possession throughout the game, but Reds goalkeeper Jose Reina was a virtual spectator for much of it and did not make his first save of note until the 86th minute.

Dalglish, whose side bowed out of the Europa League in midweek, said: "There was a bit of dispute over whether the foul occurred inside or outside the box.

"From where we are, I couldn't honestly tell you, but if we have got a fortuitous one, then we have got a fortuitous decision in that instance.

"Overall, it was a great effort from our players."

Opposite number Steve Bruce was understandably upset about the penalty decision, although he admitted it probably would not have changed the result.

He said: "I have got no complaints about the result - it might not have affected the result, the way we played today.

"However, that was a really big, key decision for somebody 80 yards away - or 70 yards away at least - to overturn the referee.

"I knew and [fourth official] Martin Atkinson knew within five seconds that it was outside the box with the technology we have got.

"Surely it has got to be time for those sort of things to be brought into play with all the technology we have got today.

"But it was one of those horrible afternoons."

From the Telegraph regarding negotiating with Kenny

“What is going on in that regard is private,” Henry said. “It is something called the Liverpool Way and you do these things behind closed doors. I am not going to talk about these things. He has done very well.” Henry had a veiled dig at Dalglish’s predecessor, Roy Hodgson, when asked if there had been a change in mood since his takeover. “Absolutely, it’s all very positive,” he added. “Someone was saying that people weren’t happy here. But I think since that person left, people are happier.”
Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."
