Oh my god, I'm going to agree with Matt here.

He's complete dog ****. How can people be impressed with him in any way?

For a supposed "ball winner", he doesn't win ANYTHING.

Lucas, at least, is a really good defensive player and has shown the ability just before his injury that he could legitimately dominate.

Spearing is slow and gets easily shrugged off. He's a total liability and absolutely nothing like Mascherano, who can actually make successful tackles. He's alright on the ball, and can play some decent passes, but he's still horribly inadequate.

Played really well, his short passing is excellent. Get another boss central mid in the summer and we are completely sorted in that department.

Against a good team we'd be punished for his awful positioning, he is too often drawn to the ball, he has very poor anticipation and is completely reactionary. He is so far off the quality we need. He was left off some bad play by Pienaars miss and by Skrtel and Enrique.

some of this is true. however, i like the way jay pushes the game in the midfield. barca have this mentality throughout (close down the ball immediately) and when one player pushes another will cover his man. jay just doesnt have the support behind him to cover his area / man. a couple of times last night this was evident and although you could argue jay was out of position i tend to think gerrard as the other CM should have covered. or henderson.

I would pick Jay ahead of Adam every single time. Deserves to keep his place after that display.

They were around before Rafa's overhaul, but he gave them some opportunities in the team.
Kelly was 15ish and Jay was 17 when Rafa came in. Hardly on the verge of a first team place. But I take your point. I still think its down to him that we are starting to see youth come through again.

DM’s get better and better with experience and despite his age, Jay is still a rookie in that department.

Just goes to show you that perhaps the price tag isn’t as important as people make out as it’s amazing the amount of criticism Spearing has received so far in his short LFC career (in general, not necessarily your post).
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I don't think he was that great but someone willing to stay back and give structure to midfield was necessary and he did that. He's still clearly learning his trade. He did some good things and got caught out not making decisions quick enough on a couple of occasions. He had a decent game, describing him as 'awful' seems obviously hyperbolic to me.

I thought you were on about the Academy overhaul with McParland, Borrell and Segura.

I agree about the youngsters situation.

I never quite thought Jay did that though (imo) he often stood around and watched play go past him, before running madly to catch up. I think his manic running disguises his poor play at times.

This is a player who people were claiming had "done more than Lucas did all season" when he first played. I think people are just desperate for him to succeed and while he might get better, I don't think he'll ever be good enough.

Not being hyperbolic mate, I really thought he was bad.
