He's a good player but nothing special, if someone offers Spurs £40m they should snap their hands off.

Dalglish confident Cole will finally come good

Kenny Dalglish believes Joe Cole’s small weekend contribution may still have a big impact on his future.

The England midfielder has endured a wretched first season at Liverpool, and sunk so far in the pecking order that his *departure in the summer is *beginning to look inevitable.

Even Cole seems resigned to his fate. When asked about his future at the club he joined on a £100,000-a-week contract only nine months ago, he refused to look further than the next few matches.

But while Dalglish realises the big-name signing has hardly set the world alight, he believes the goal Cole scored during a cameo appearance as a *substitute against Birmingham on Saturday may be a turning point in his faltering career.

The Reds boss has been around long enough to know that Cole could still be merely putting himself in the shop window as the campaign draws to a close, but that might be the best result for both player and club.

“Joe’s goal wasn’t a little *contribution,” said Dalglish.

“It could be massive for him because he has not had as many opportunities as he would have liked as he’s been injured and suspended.

“He’s had a difficult time, but it is a great credit to him the way he has been training and working every single day.

“He’s not let it affect him, and that’s all I can ask for – for anyone when they do get their chance to go on and do their best. He is fantastic in training. He plays everything right and doesn’t have a problem.”

Cole has already been linked to a move back to London in the summer, with Tottenham and his former club West Ham showing some interest as the end of the season approaches.

But his wages will be a *stumbling block to any move. Liverpool pushed the boat out to sign him on a free by offering a massive contract.

But after a *disastrous few months where Cole’s injury jinx has struck for a third season in a row, matching those wages will be difficult for any club.

It could mean *Liverpool have to swallow a financial loss and let him go for a small fee or even on a free, but Dalglish is adamant Cole has done himself no harm by maintaining his fitness level despite numerous setbacks.

“Joe, like Maxi and others out of the team, are giving themselves the best opportunity because, in training, they are committed and determined,” the Anfield manager added.

“Everybody has to work hard to get anything and Joe is no different from anybody else. But he’s done that, and has got his chance. It could be important for him.”

Both Dalglish and Cole have been careful not to speak precisely about the player’s future, and the suspicion is both parties would welcome a fresh start.

Liverpool’s owners have been keen to prune a wage bill they have described as staggering, and Cole is an obvious candidate for cost-cutting because his departure would free up huge resources to attract new players.

Liverpool winger David Amoo may make his loan move to Hull permanent.

Amoo, who joined the Tigers last month, still has a year left on his contract at Anfield but fears for his future at the club.

And the 20-year-old would be happy to complete a £400,000 switch to the KC Stadium.

Amoo scored his first goal in five appearances for City in Monday’s 1-1 draw at QPR. “We’ll see how it goes,” he said. “It is up to the manager and the coaches but I’m enjoying it at Hull.”

                            Dalglish will not rush Carroll

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish will not rush Andy Carroll into a reunion with Newcastle if the £35million striker is unfit.

The striker left St James' Park on January transfer deadline day in a deal which made him the most expensive British footballer in history.

Carroll could face his former team-mates when they visit Anfield on Sunday, but he is not certain to feature due to a knee injury.

The England international missed Liverpool's demolition of Birmingham on Saturday and Dalglish has no plans to take unnecessary risks for the sake of nostalgia.

"We will take an educated opinion on whether he is fit or not," said the Reds boss.

"If he is not fit then it will be a disappointment for Andy but he's here for five years and I'm sure he'll play Newcastle more than just this Sunday coming up.

"His future comes long before a game against Newcastle."

Meanwhile, Dalglish remains level-headed over Liverpool's chances of overtaking fifth-placed Tottenham, who are due to travel Anfield on 15th May.

"We will just look at the next game and see what happens," he said.

"It is going to be a difficult game but where we are going to end up at the end of the season I don't know.
