The trouble is theatricality is all part of the game too and that's a shame. All these defenders waving their arms around to remonstrate theatrically with players they've clipped and accusing them of diving, that's just as bad - although it's possible in some cases they may not be aware of the contact, it can't be true in all cases.

I watched quite a lot of football this weekend and I noticed so much cynicism. Midfielders giving away well-judged fouls, happy to take the booking to stop an attacker bearing down on the back four, players choosing to go down on contact (which is their right, according to Neville - while it's true it's also sad), rolling around in agony of course, even claiming throw-ins when it clearly came off them, and so on.

    It's all really unpleasant.

The way Ferdinand reacted I thought Adam must have dived, but Ferdinand admitted there was contact, I do wonder if that reaction spared him a second booking?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Just one more cynical attempt to gain an advantage.

It doesn't help how the media spin things either. For instance, Ferguson's comments about supporters' chants were welcome I thought. But on 5Live it was mentioned with a chuckle that the context he used - Liverpool/Man United is the biggest game - was a calculated insult to Man City. Ho ho ho, Fergie's mind games - all that sort of guff.

Now it's possibly true, given Ferguson's bilious temperament, but they don't know. As it is such speculation serves merely to cheapen, to propel football even closer to the gutter.

      It's as bad as politics.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Whisky nose should also be asked to explain his comments about Suarez's apparent diving. Glad the club have asked for Evra to be banned.

The bit about claiming throw ins and corners when a player knows the ball came off them, although less significant than penalty appeals etc in the context of the result, is the most disappointing thing for me. Possibly because the aren't usually crucial incidents. It's unbelievable how shameless they can be, it's become an instinctive response to raise an arm no matter what the circumstances. Strikers do it a lot when they want to pretend the keeper got a touch on their shot that ended up in seat Z25.

It's shameless, and they get away with it because it isn't considered shameful. There should be a 5 minute slot at the end of MOTD where they replay all of these from the day and make sarcy comments about the cheating cunts.

On sunday Supplement Sam Allardyce said that Adam did what he has to in modern football. If he stayed on his feet he wouldn't have got the freekick. All this diving when there IS contact is neccesary as the referees don't give a free kick if you stay on your feet! However its the diving when no contact (like Downings one) that should be in the hate campaign, that IS cheating. Suarez goes down with contact.

Somehow I doubt opposition fans and the press will be lining up to have a go at Downing like they were with Suarez

But I agree with what you say

Suarez has been very well behaved lately I thought, he'd blatantly changed the way he was during the derby and carried it on on saturday. Shame he's now been tarred a racist instead!

Stewy and Ashley Young (the worst in English football for it) were the divers on saturday but I guess the English boys dont fit the agenda.

Downings dive in the first half was a disgrace tho - when Evra was about 2 metres away from him - cringeworthy!!

Yes but I think it's just a consequence of the attitude that you should go down when the slightest contact is made. You're expecting contact, you're ready to fall because, as Allardyce said, you don't get the free kick otherwise, and sometimes there's isn't contact but you've already set up yourself to go over.

It looks terrible of course and it should be punished, as a line has to be drawn somewhere, but it's actually just the next point along on the spectrum from "trying to stay on your feet at all costs" at one end to "outright cheating" at the other.

Trying to change the subject from what it was, which you two has spectacularly missed.

Why the indignation at the question though? Its pretty valid. Do we rest him for this game and have him off the bench?

Why would he need a rest though, he won't have played for a week and will not play for another week. Hardly needs a rest.
