Could it be that the clause became active if we didn't reach CL football this year?

Could it be that for him to sign a new contract at all that he demanded the release clause?

Could it be that there is no release clause at all?

I think that he'll stay for next season, but if we don't get CL I think he'll go.

Probably true but we still did a very bad job. Back in the Rafa days we sued the media when they crossed the line. We should never stopped doing that.

That sent out the right signals to the players that we will protect our players all the way.

The signals that the club now send out is that the brand is more important than the players.

We let the media have field day after field day. That isn't acceptable.

You only have to look at the words the interviewer talking to him uses, how he says it would make Uruguyans proud to have a player like Suarez at Madrid.

        It's their football pinnacle.

The only way he'll stay, imo, is if Madrid don't firm up their interest in him, if they are serious and make an offer we accept, lets be honest he's off.

After reading the full translation I feel slightly better about the whole thing. I'm pragmatic about it. If Madrid do come in for him, and it still doesn't seem concrete that they will, he will go there. I think he's made that clear enough. But he's certainly not throwing his toys out of the pram demanding a move. I completely understand his stance and think it's entirely normal. In fact he comes across very well in that interview really.

Incidentally if he'd had none of the controversy he's had here I still think his position would be the same, if a giant like Madrid comes in for him, given our inability to compete for trophies, I still think he'd want to move there regardless.

I think we have to wait this out now and be prepared with a replacement should the worst happen. The one thing we want to avoid though is him leaving late in the window with little to no time to find an adequate replacement. I think fear of that might force our hand and lead us to sell him early

They denied the Mirror access to everyone apart from the pre and post game press conferences for at least 2 weeks. Problem was, the Echo is owned by the Mirror and the Echo was still allowed access.

                  .

Personally, I accepted that this was going to be his last season, so I'm not madly fussed about all of this coming out. (Well, apart from the whole players-not-honouring-agreements-that-they-willingly-signed etc etc, but that's a whole other argument). So if he goes, he goes, and he'll be getting a bollocking and thanks in equal measures.
Once one of the top continental sides express an interest, I don't think its unfair to say that top Latin players naturally gravitate towards such a move, both for cultural and sporting reasons, so its something that buying clubs are usually aware of when pursuing these players.
The flip-side of course is that the more Nothern European/British players are more attracted to remaining at home, once their ambitions are being realised - this has allowed us to hold onto such luminaries in the modern game such as Downing, Carroll etc

A fair bargain if ever there was one.

Perez also spoke about Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who said he would not be able to turn down a move to the Spanish capital.

"Suarez is a great player and I am sure all in the world would want him. I like him and others too, but it does not always fit."

I think people need to remember that the clause was added to his new contract which was signed LAST SUMMER. I.e. 12 months ago, when he was a great but erratic player. Missing chances, left, right and centre in Kenny's team.

12 months ago £40m was about right IMO, obviously on the back of the season he has just had we'd want more but that's not how it works is it?!

So it looks like Balague had right when it comes down to the clause and The Echo wrong.

The Echo isn't any different than Marca is for Real. If the club want to twist the truth then they will do it.

The club uses the Echo and the Echo uses the club when they need to do it.

                        IMO of course.

Didn't someone suggest the other day that such clauses have no legal weight in England?

Luis having a moan that his family has to read negative press about him is the very definition of irony.

i think he's looking to move for sporting reasons and blaming the media for leaving offers him a nice route out of lfc.

Someone was saying that, but not sure how true that is.
I'd imagine he more so had a written understanding in the new contract that if either top Spanish side came with a decent offer (say 40m), then the club were obligated to allow him to speak with them. Liverpool, still reeling from all the Evra crap and managerial upheaval were probably only to happy to agree to anything that extended Suarez' stay.
Not a release clause as such, but same effect I suppose.

Nothing to back this up of course, but its clear that there is some understanding in place.......too much **** flying around.
