Both low-key signings at the time though, not established world stars like Klinsmann and the others that followed after him.

Agreed - it never took off until the time of Klinsmann etc and I always wondered why? There were evidently bargains out there as Ardiles demonstrated but maybe English football was (for the most part) too insular to embrace Jonny Foreigner.

Plus I guess we had a fairly substantial influx from the home nations and especially from Scotland who clearly had far more players of a better standard back then - Dalglish and Hansen to name but two.

I seem to remember one of the big things with the press and Klinsman was that they were making a big thing about his rep as a diver. Which he was quite bad for. He then scored on his debut, and celebrated with a massive pantomime dive.

The press were all over him when he signed. It must have also been around the time of names on shirts, and SKY. When football went Blockbuster.

Aww. It's strange that we employ Coates to be Luis's mate.

English clubs just couldn't compete financially for the top foreign players prior to Sky's TV money. The ban from European competition from 85-91 was a major turn off too.

removing all the weak links makes us stronger

Yeah he made his swan dive his goal celebration. Football was really exciting back then! I could watch anyone (except Sheffield Utd, Ipswich or Oldham)

I don't care if they have to do this charity work, seeing the smiles on those children's face makes it so worthwhile.

I can't help but get teary seeing them smiling through such adversity.

Yeah, but they earn a lot of money so should learn to accept it comes with responsibilities
