Exactly it won't happen - what next are we gonna sell PFK for 15 million ffs?!!Originally posted by Shaggy View PostIf someone bid £30m+ for him, it would surely have to be considered. £30m+ for any 31 year old is totally insane. You'd be crazy not to at least consider it.Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

We're at about 3:1 not in favour which is about what I expected. Far from the most ridiculous poll we've ever had.
In answer to some other specific points:
Downing - I never wanted him anyway, I have put Mata in as the high quality Left Sided attacking player that we need. The 'better' way of reducing the spend would be not to buy Wickham or Henderson, sell Kuyt and fund Aguero that way. Leaves us a bit short though.
30mil - I honestly think we could get that sort of money from Real Madrid. Of course it would have to be a foreign team.
Selling Gerrard - Obviously any LFC fan would be sad about seeing him go and the...romance of having a one club player is a big emotional factor but I think sometimes we need to put emotions to one side. Certainly that is the premise of this thread anyway.
Selling top players - I've said it before, i'll say it again: Big clubs buy and sell top players without getting an inferiority complex about it. Real, Barca, Man U, Milans, Juventus, Bayern etc all sell top top players for top top money and reinvest in other top top players. We sold Torres, many panicked initially but as the dust settles we now feel better off with Suarez, that doesn't even begin to think about the mid term value side of things.
Value of Gerrard - He is a club legend, the best player of a generation and still the first name on the teamsheet when fit. I wont go on and try and list all the superlatives, take it as read.
The flip side, 31 and injury prone (i had heard that the keyhole surgery on his groin, although minor as far as surgery goes, causes all sorts of other weaknesses as they had to cut through various layers to get to the site of the injury, long story short he will always be prone to injury as a result of that surgery) whether that will continue to be the case I don't know. Counterintuitively, we played better football at the end of the season without him in the team than we played with him in the team. Whether that is an effect on the rest of the team stepping up to try to fill the void or a symptom of Stevies style remains to be seen.
Aguero - He was just a case in point. It's more a case study for debate than a genuine question. I would bloody love it if we signed him though. Of all the players that could replace the contribution of Gerrard to our team, he's probably the most realistic possibility. If we play more of a 433 then IMO we could cope with replacing an attacking midfielder with a forward.
FSG Investment / Selling to buy - There are limits, we absolutely need a 1st choice LB and an attacking left sided player whatever formation we pick next year. We also need more options on the bench/cover especially at CB. That doesn't leave a lot for a top top extra. Aguero at <£40mil is a steal and we should consider most options for trying to make it happen if at all possible."that is my opinion and that is more important than what anyone else has to say about it" - Mr A.Fergusson, Oct 2011

Just on the Arsenal point - They sold top players and bought Le Wickham, Bongo Hendersani, i'm not advocating that policy, strictly top quality replacements.
Also to be clear..by 'extensive research' I mean 'off the top of my head guestimates'Last edited by BillobShaisley; 08-06-11, 02:38 PM."that is my opinion and that is more important than what anyone else has to say about it" - Mr A.Fergusson, Oct 2011

His name is worth 30 million, much like other players that we've seen transferred over the years for more than what they are valued at.Originally posted by Daniel 7 View PostOnly the most blinkered / rose tinted of fans would think Gerrard is worth £30m on the form and injury record displayed in the last two seasons.

I didn't realise it was that easy. Quick, let's get a Deed Poll renaming Christian Poulsen as Lionel Messi then sell him for £200mOriginally posted by Qantaga View PostHis name is worth 30 million, much like other players that we've seen transferred over the years for more than what they are valued at.

Gerrard has always been and is still a "Dream Player" then we bought another "Dream Player" who could do no wrong until he ****ed off to greener grass when the going got tough, so why risk selling a real "Dream Player" for another potential journeyman. Don't get me wrong I'd love to Agureo playing for us but not at the cost of letting a real superstar go.
