defending a cross facing your own goal is much harder than when you've got your back to your own goal.

I completely agree with that, although I don't think getting to the byline is crucial in this; whether the defender will be facing the goal or not is to do with their positioning relative to where the ball is delivered, and the movement of our targets rather than where the ball is crossed from.

I think getting ourselves in situations where opposition defenders find themselves facing goal is something we haven't done enough of generally for some time. I can see it coming though...

I kinda do - whether I agree with it or not I'm not sure, but I see the reasoning. I think it's probably as simple as him being more suited to the patterns of play we're trying to establish. As much as Kuyt lacks flair though, he has been very productive for us, so it's frustrating to see him benched for Hendo when he's really not managed to settle yet. Such is life with a new player at times I suppose.
