I actually think this was our poorest performance this season just because of the lack of chances we created. Considering the amount of possession we had and the play we dominated, we should be creating a lot more. There was just a lack of ideas and it was so predictable. Kuyt, Downing, Johnson and Adam lacked any innovation. Those long, floating crosses into Carroll.

The delivery was poor, there was very little pace in the side and the tactic just wasn't working. We know we can play better. When we have Maxi, Bellamy, Suarez and Lucas in the side its just a whole different team. I think we need to work on crossing and our attacking play considerably. We were very unlucky to lose by 3 goals but we made very little chances ourselves.

You're missing my point somewhat. It's not about fees, it's about performances.

A good player is a good player and a poor one is a poor one - the fees dont change that and if you sign a good player, then he's a good player who you're happy with, likewise if you buy a poor one, you're disappointed because he's poor.

If Downing had cost us £8m, the poor level of his performances would be exactly the same. He wouldnt be good enough. Likewise, Bellamy was free and is a good player who's performed well. That would be exactly the same if he had cost us £10m.

Would you be saying Downing was a good signing if he had cost £8m?

The money doesnt matter, if they're good then great, if they arent they need to be moved on.

EDIT - and i'm now going to play my joker - LDP agrees with you. :bird:

I may get shot down here, but if Rafa had been given that amount of money to spend we would have had a hell of a lot of better quality players to show for it than the dross that was on display today.

We could have got someone good for £35 up front or even a stop-gap for 10m and spent the rest in the summer. We could also have bought a decent winger for £20m too.

Woeful woeful buys and they shouldn't be allowed to be unleashed with the cash again. I actually think we've regressed from last summer. They're not even squad players. Bellamy is far better than Downing, was free but he's made of glass. We need to splash the cash again but do we trust who we've got in charge to be allowed to be let loose with it as it's not a bottomless pit a la City or the Chavs.

Only Enrique from our summer signings has impressed me greatly so far. Adam and Henderson have had their moments, Downing has just been a let down and I haven't seen enough of Coates to pass comment.

I just wonder when Carroll will start getting on the score sheet? Emile Heskey would probably be more effective up front at the moment.
I have no problem with you passing your criticism as I too think that he made mistake with some of the signings as well tactically in few games we played this season but to threw in a liner about Kevin Phillips (or now Heskey) was uncalled for and frankly wrong.

If you are going to criticize him in the rational way fine but don't insult him as he doesn't deserve that especially as you said that you have nothing but the respect and admiration for him.

                Easy to forget eh?

And yeah our rivals slipped up and we didnt take advantage - but it was City away, they've won EVERY SINGLE HOME GAME this season and only conceded 4 goals. Maybe a bit of perspective could be a good friend for you.
We've been poor for the past twenty years. You can't blame Hicks and Gillett for everything. This club has been inconsistent and poor for two decades. Our club seems to like slashing money up the wall to tunes of hundreds of millions. It seems this trend is continuing with us. Kenny has spent over £100m and recopued back £75million and we're still in the same position we were back in February, despite the investment we're still in the same position why? We're our own worst enemy at this club. I am also not commenting on just the Man City match. We've been disappointing to say the least this season.

Lord knows why we sacked Rafa Benitez after one poor season. That's probably as big of a mistake by this club as appointing Souness as our manager, appointing Parry as our Chief Executive, selling the club to Hicks and Gillett and appointing Hodgson as our manager. Stupid decision, I hope Rafa comes back and finishes what he started with another Istanbul, because I certainly don't think King Kenny will bring those days back to Anfield.

And how many of them that went passed the 1st man were anywhere near Carroll

I don't think he deserves much stick tonight the crosses were **** his link up wasn't bad had a decent flicked effort and set up Kuyt

He needs a goal and we need to put the ball into areas he can score and until we learn how to cross its not going to happen.
I am not sure which game that guy was watching but we certainly did not spend 90 minutes crossing the ball into the box and the ones that did make it in did so after we ran down the channel, stopped, the runners in the box stopped, the defenders in the box stopped, we lay off, and agian and then deleiver a **** cross in which etither is too close to the keeper, or is too close to the first man ..

Utter garbage service I can beleive Downing is used week in week out on the right eventually instead of having a superb left winger we will have an average one on both flanks .... Enough already

                    Not very good really.

Made me feel sick watching that.

I'm worried about our future you know, we weren't great tonight.

They are facetious comments to what I perceive as stupid transfer policy. Quite why anyone would want to sign a British footballer over a foreign one is beyond me. Are you telling me there aren't better foreign footballers than Adam, Carroll, Downing and Henderson?

Poor for the past 20 years? What tosh.

What you mean is, we havent won the league for the past 20 years. Why not just say that? We've had some very good teams and some very good times during the past 20 years. We havent won the title, but we've no devine right to and compared to most sets of fans, we've had plenty to enjoy over the past 2 decades. You're very spoilt if you cant be grateful for what we've had.

And anyway, we dominated the previous 20 years before that. What do you expect, 40 years worth of domination? When does that ever happen in football??

To say we're in the same position as we were back in February is pure nonsense. We're 2 points off 4th place. How many points off it were we in February?

I love the contradiction here First you say we've not been good enough for 20 years and then you start yearning for the times of 3-4 years ago. Make up your mind

We looked a better team in the second half of last season, before the summer signings. If Downing, Carroll and Adam aren't performing to their level they need to be taken out of the starting line up. Regardless of fees. I regret to say this but I'm starting to think Dalglish is being too stubborn. We were far better going forward and taking chances last season under Dalglish.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

thats bollix, we were staring into the abysis with a real if not somehwhat long chance of relegation, our first goal is the get back into Europe, we are 3 points off a lack luster Chelsea who have CL football to contend with and a manager 3 years in the job, Kenny is doing just fine

equally you can't pin 20 years of bad results on the current new leadership. even if they are doing things right, it's still too early to talk about being a great team again. we have our moments, but having spent to bring in a young english spine to the team that will mature, they can now concentrate on bringing in the real talent. mark my words, we will bring in a few corkers in the coming year.
