I think he was bought as an out an out finisher, and he has a bit of the Robbie Keane's about his play. ie too much time to think and he has time for doubt to set in. He looked very good for short periods when we've attacked at pace and the ball has been moved quickly and crossed from deep. That doesn't happen enough though in reality and he can't be blamed for that.
Downing was clearly signed to supply those crosses and create chances for him, but Downing's not being given the ball early enough to utilise what he has in abundance which is pace and the ability to run on to the ball and cross it. I don't notice a huge amount but I have noticed that Adam's long cross field passes usually go diagonally from left to right (as it would from a left footer) and when Downing recieves the ball it's usually after Enrique has brought it over the half way line. He recieves the ball with his back to goal and has absolutely no idea what to do with it. What we need is for Gerrard to play the same sort of ball diagonally from right to left for Downing to run on to and then we might see a better attacking play from Carroll.
Don't disagree with any of that mate.

I think if we have learned one thing from this season is that it's the result and not the performance that matters. One nil away to one of the best teams in europe is not to be sniffed at, regardless if we had a defensive attitude.
It wasn't vintage tonight but we got the result. I'd have snapped your hand off for a 1-0 win.
I hope - and I think - we'll be more attacking in the second leg. Tonight was always going to be about being sensible and keeping it close; I can't say I enjoyed the second half with our team sat so deep but we got the result.
excellent win, professional performance tonight. Keeing City from scoring is no mean feat, we managed that and grabbed a goal for a decent win tonight.
It was a good workman like win, I'd happily take a few more of those over watching us dominate and get nothing for it.

If we end up going through then it won't matter one iota. My feeling at this point though is that we missed an opportunity to put them under a bit more pressure. We weren't playing against their excellent home record; we were playing against a weakened team that could be got at.
What will happen in the second leg if say Richards replaces Savic at centreback and Silva is back? I'd say that would make them much stronger at the back and more of a threat at the other end of the pitch. I appreciate that we were lumbered with Carroll up front but we should have targeted Savic for the whole game instead of giving him an easy time in the second half.
