Sure performance wasn't the most inspiring but too many times we played better and we couldn't come up with the win.

This was huge and we have to start looking a bigger picture.

We finally have a genuine chance to get some silverware this year..

A game like this shows how miserable people can be. We just beat the number 1 team in England, played a better first half than them on their turf and defending in heroic manner in the second half - and yet there is always something to complain about! Focus on the 50 positive things instead of the 2 negative is all I can say, and football is so much more enjoyable

Solid performance today, kept a clean sheet against City away from home, which is almost impossible these days and we managed to control the game much of the first half.

This performance can only help to gain confidence for the coming games.

Oh and I for one didn't think Carroll was that poor yesterday, actually thought he did well all things considered. Standing basically the lone striker for the entire second half having very few to lay the ball of to.

Nice to see that dipso, Milner, doing a Rooney following Johnson's tackle on Lescott.

Anyway, good result, which in the end is what matters at this stage of a competition, but it was very much a game of two halves in the end. We were far hungrier in the first half against a City team missing its three best players, and they were very standoffish, which is a feature that's stood out in their recent subpar performances.
Good movement, good pressing was a feature of our play up until the last 5 or so mins of the first half, and whether the loss of Spearing or the introduction of Nasri in City's mid switched things around, either way it happened.
As good as our play was though, there was still little happening ahead of the play at times, meaning that there really wasn't much in the way of good chances created against a City defence missing Kompany, which I was surprised with.
Second half though was another story, after the first few mins, you could see City were far more determined, getting to the second ball quicker and we backed off far earlier than I thought we would. Wasn't happy with some of the way subs were handled though, as there was a 20min period when it clearly looked like some of the players were unsure with what their roles were.
Surprised with this, as it's something that shouldn't be happening given Kenny and Clarke's usual preparation.
This led to long periods of conceding possession, and with nothing happening up top, and the gap between midfield and Carroll widening, the ball was coming back far too often. Reina made one or two good saves and with the likes of Aguero not taking the couple opportunities that came his way, we had to dig in and produce a resiliant defence with next to nothing happening over the halfway line.
Take our win though, and I think we'll do more than enough in the second leg to make it to the final.

I think he was bought as an out an out finisher, and he has a bit of the Robbie Keane's about his play. ie too much time to think and he has time for doubt to set in. He looked very good for short periods when we've attacked at pace and the ball has been moved quickly and crossed from deep. That doesn't happen enough though in reality and he can't be blamed for that.

Downing was clearly signed to supply those crosses and create chances for him, but Downing's not being given the ball early enough to utilise what he has in abundance which is pace and the ability to run on to the ball and cross it. I don't notice a huge amount but I have noticed that Adam's long cross field passes usually go diagonally from left to right (as it would from a left footer) and when Downing recieves the ball it's usually after Enrique has brought it over the half way line. He recieves the ball with his back to goal and has absolutely no idea what to do with it. What we need is for Gerrard to play the same sort of ball diagonally from right to left for Downing to run on to and then we might see a better attacking play from Carroll.
              This.

Putting the two fingers up a la the Loon to denote a two footed tackle ? Think that's what he did, may as well wave an imaginary card.

Heres the Stevie, Mancini clip, if anyones not heard, he's right too of course, and Mancini knew it, and had no answer.

Hear the interviewer go...'we're in the middle of an interview here'...then crawl to Mancini again saying....'But this is only half time isn't it Roberto....tell him Roberto...tell him to go away.....Roberto!'.

Pleased with that, thought we defended very well.

                              Now to finish the job.
