The biggest letdown of today wasnt that we lost. It's the LIST of other things that just arent right.
First off, team selection. You might say we've got injuries and there isnt much choice, but to field a central midfield 3 of Spearing, Henderson and Adam is criminal. There's no goal threat, no real guile, no tempo and no creativity. It's just three journeymen who dont happen to be old.
Second thing - no passion. Disgracefully, the players just dont want it. Kenny's no master tactician, but i thought he was a motivator, yet there's no motivation there. There's no urgency, no fight, no tempo. They look like it's a chore to be out there, like they cant be ****ed. That's never going to be acceptable. If Kenny cant provide the one thing that i considered to be his main strength, then there is a problem.
Number three - subs. You can say Bellamy wasnt playing well, but in our entire squad, we have 3 players you could call a proven & consistent goal threat. Captain fantastic was on the bench, Suarez was left to do it all on his own and Bellamy's the third. So Kenny takes him off and leaves us with just Suarez. I say just Suarez, because even when Gerrard came on, he played that infuriating deeper role where he cant inflluence things.
Next up - positioning of players. Dirk Kuyt's main strength is his workrate and then, his ability to pop up with a goal. He does not have pace. He does not beat men. He is not creative. So what do you do with him? Put him upfront where his main strengths are most useful. Where do we not need him? Yep, on the wing. And left wing, more bizarrely. Especially when Downing comes on and gets put on the right while Dirk keeps toiling on the left, predictably cutting in onto his right foot EVERY time he looked to cross. Baffling.
After that, we have another main problem. Can anyone tell me what our style of play is? What our method of football is? Because i cant for one minute work it out. We dont have one. Everything we do is random. There is no plan. No tactical process, no nothing. We dont attack with any purpose - it's just random, off the bat, spontaneous. And predictable. And ****. Low percentage football, no game intelligence, no clever movement and players who havent got a clue what each other are going to do. What do they actually DO on the training ground? Because the outcome is ****. We were never going to score today, it was so inept.
Finally, Kenny's post match comments. No Kenny, we didnt lose because of luck. We lost because we are clueless. Yes their goal was a bit lucky, but they actually created something. They looked like they had some kind of plan. We didnt. It might be debatable if Kenny is the right man for us or not, but if he thinks that was acceptable today, then i dont think he's the right man. The first step to solving a problem is to recognise it - if you think there isnt one, then you wont solve it.
If Kenny doesnt think today was a major problem, then he's not going to solve it. No idea where we go from here.
