LFC recruitment 2: Redknapp rumour seems to be just that. Not among possibles. Capello not v likely either
So it could end up being R*fa, because nobody else want to manage us. Just waiting for Martinez to turn us down.

Who'd have thunk it. How the mighty have fallen etc.

I have been giving this whole manager thing some thought over the weekend and something occured to me on sunday while we were at an under 10's tournament in north yorkshire.

The under 10's team that i coached had won the league the season before last as well as pretty much every single tournament we had entered. For all the lads that werent playing we set up another team in a lower league so that they could play with the idea that one of the parents would step into a coaching role.

Anyway, the team got off to a bad start and they lost their opening games very heavily. None of the parents wanted to take the team on and I volunteered to step down and coach them this season.

I had gone from a team that had lost only once in nearly two seasons to a team that was shipping 7 / 8 goals a game. Anyway I stuck to my guns and played the game that I knew.

I told parents we werent going to play more direct or 'longer' football aimed at solely getting results because i knew already we wouldnt get results but were going to do it in this way.

      1. work hard with the lads in training to improve their technical ability (we're talking about nine / ten year olds)
      2. Improve the players and get them playing better individually with more confidence
      3. As the players improve the team cohesion improves
      4. If the team improves technically and tactically our results improve

Ok... bear with me here. At first it was very tough because some of the lads were new to football and literally couldnt control a ball. But bit by bit they started to get it by the end of the season we were playing some quality football. We outplayed all the top five teams but lost four matches. I didnt care because the team were playing some really good attacking football and the lads were all giving excellent performances.

Anyway, back to this sunday. the season finished and i went back to my old team (who too hadnt had a good season) and at this tournament we reached the final. It occurred to me that by using the same tactics and approach to football but replacing the players that I had for much better ones the level of results had improved.

So the system was right but the players werent. We all know that martinez sets his teams out to play good attacking football but they dont always get the results. By replacing what he's got at wigan with what he's got a liverpool surely he would play the same type of football but just with better players and thus better end product.

Its not like with AVB where he failed with top players because bar mcCarthy no one else from the wigan team would even get into our squad.

Would martinez' philosophy be such a flop at liverpool ? Im not so sure.

No disrespect but there is a hell of a difference between under 10 football and adult football

Nevermind the enormous difference between Sunday league football and Premier League

Thats before we even discuss the merits of stepping out of managing Wigan and going to LFC

He was also talking about going from QPR to Tottenham and the difference between small and big clubs and how much of a shock it was when he moved.

And that is a lesson we learned only recently - the spotlight is bigger than some people realise at Anfield. Not everyone can cope - and Martinez would need to learn on his feet... Our expectations have to be top 4, there is nothing on Martinez CV that suggests he can deliver.

lec... the point is that if liverpool fc are happy with martinez tactics and his approach to developping players then surely his appointment wouldnt necessarily be a disaster.

This is what I think will happen.

                  - the fans want rafa - which the owners just wont let happen at any cost
                  - the owners want AVB - and I believe that they will probably get him
                  - Martinez will be the fall back option if FSG cant agree a deal with AVB

Whichever way, if we get avb i will get on with it with a degree of optimism. If martinez gets it then i will be cautious but i dont think it will be the end of the world either.

I just hope fsg can get their man into place quickly for the sake of the club.

One of our previous boards was happy with Roy and his tactics

Well at least happy enough to employ him

I'm sorry but I dont see Martinez as a good appointment irrespective of his style of play and how happy FSG may or may not be with his tactics

There was nothing on Guardiola's or Mourinho to suggest it either. Or Shankly, Fagan, Dalglish, Wenger etc.

I've kinda changed my mind on Martinez and would be willing to give him a chance. That's probably largely due to every other candidate worth a shot ruling themselves out, except Rafa but it seems we can't have him.

Our trusted sources in Boston say that both AVB and Martinez are in town. Also suggestion that Martinez favours Pako as his no.2

Interesting, if he does get it he'll defo need to assemble some staff that'll get respect.

I'd give Martinez a chance dont get me wrong

I like him as a person (which is more than I could ever say about Roy)

I just dont see it being a good appointment

Oh and by the way Shanks joined when the team was in Division 2 (as were Huddersfield)

Here is his league record with his other clubs
Carlisle was 42 wins and 22 defeats from 95 matches
Grimsby was 62 wins and 35 defeats from 118 matches
Workington was 35 wins and 27 defeats from 85 matches
Huddersfield was 49 wins and 47 defeats in 129 matches

Well Mourinho had won the Champs League before Chelsea. Dalglish had been steeped in the tradition of the club he was about to manage as had Fagan and were brought up on the successes of a golden period at LFC, as was Guardiola at Barca. Wenger had won Ligue 1 with Monaco and arrived at a time when his methods were totally revolutionary to football and his methods have been adopted by pretty much everyone since he arrived. His appointment was a masterstroke by Arsenal.

Martinez has won As a player
Football League Third Division (1): 1996–97
                              Football League Trophy (1): 1998–99
                              Swansea City
                              Football League Trophy (1): 2005–06
                              As a manager
                              Swansea City
                              Football League One (1): 2007–08

Martinez is a risky appointment for me. I'd prefer AVB to him, as I have slightly fewer reservations about him.

I'd rather go for someone like Van Gaal or Laudrup or even Rudi Garcia ahead of Martinez

Martinez should be absolutely the last resort imo
