I keep changing my mind (not breeding reptiles and all that) - I thought AVB might be a good option, but the more I hear about him the less impressed I am. I actually think that he's a much bigger risk than any of the other candidates who have been linked to the job. Rafa is without doubt the obvious choice, if the owners are hoping to compete for CL places again then Benitez is clearly the man most likely to achieve that aim. Martinez is a good manager and a good man, in my opinion he ticks lots of boxes and I haven't heard a particularly convincing argument for any other realistic potential manager.

You are out of your mind if you think we are a mid table club. We are one of the richest clubs in the world making record sponsorship and shirt deals with one of the biggest supporter bases in the world and rich owners that are ambitious.Originally posted by vonk View PostWe are a mid table team at the moment, the table doesn't lie. We may be able to get there in the future, but it's going to take time and money. We are not going to get a big time manager at this point and people should get used to the idea of a young manager like Martinez and a considerable rebuilding job. Getting on the managers back after a series of losses is a bad move. We can't demand instant success, it's not realistic. I can see the Rafapologists giving the new man about 6 months before they are on his back demanding Rafa be reinstated. That's just wrong.
OK they might not be Sheikhs but they have money and the club can generate sufficient funds without debt interest payments to make.
We are a big club that have had 2 'bad' seasons. Hell we only won one cup this season and played some great football at times what a mess!
That doesn't mean we can get some top manager but it's not because we are a mid table club if we hire someone like Martinez.
It's partly down to timing (not many top Managers available), younger Managers that have been very successful are all in the middle of projects with clubs they feel committed to and Rafa won't be picked because they've tried going back in time once already with Kenny.
If we hire someone like Martinez it will be because based on the Managers that are currently available he best fits the strategic direction they want to take so they CHOOSE to hire him.
Anyone that says its because he's the best we could attract is wrong.
I'm no saying I agree with the owners, but they haven't even revealed what their strategy is yet so I don't know how anyone can agree or disagree with it yet.
What I do know is that the owners tried out the plan us fans wanted and hired Kenny and it didn't work out the way they wanted so I think they are entitled to try it out their way this time and we need to support them and hope they get it right.
But they aren't looking at people like Martinez because we are a mid table club and he's the only one interested. That's a ridiculous thing to think.
I'm 100% certain that if we wanted someone like Capello we could get him, maybe even if Chelsea wanted him too.
But we don't want him because he doesn't fit into the profile the owners want.
Anyway, because of what I think the strategy is, I'm more interested in the Director of Football appointment to be honest. I think that appointment is going to be much more important than the Manager one.

Spot on
Its time we moved on in every sense and it looks like FSG are doing that. We have money, We have a global fan base, We have a lean operating set up, We are still a massive club and we are no officially one on a real modernization. Make no bones about it, FSG want CL football and the Lg title just as much as us, if not more because its there money in play. These are smart people with a proven track record.
I am quietly confident come the end of the summer all the pieces will be in place, so we can all enjoy a real rebuilding adventure.Anybody who criticizes Klopp ever is a James Blunt. Nov 2015

My point is that we are a mid table team at this moment on the pitch. We don't know if we have the funds, none of that has been shown yet. We have problems attacting the top players because of CL and I think the same applies to the top managers in the world. I'm not saying we can't get back there with the right investment and time. We will have to accept Martinez or AVB or Laudrup or whoever. They are not perfect but we need to accept that this will be a long term project, not an immediate top 4 next season project. All of us fans need to have patience with the owners and the new man, whoever he is. It might take this project a few seasons to show results.

Probably right, so hopefully they will make a decision and get on with it. Thing is, will FSG have the patience? I thought we were at the start a 3 year plan last year?Originally posted by vonk View PostMy point is that we are a mid table team at this moment on the pitch.
