I think one of the unspoken things happening here is that FSG and Ian Ayre in particular are not projecting solid leadership in any of this. What I think people resent are the following:
1. I think people are uncertain how much FSG know about football
2. The only person at the club who had any football knowledge, not marketing or revenue, but football-- was Kenny. Yes, his signings were ****, yes the points total was ****, yes his tactics were often ****, but there is no denying his knowledge of the game. It is one thing to have a plan and fail, it is another to not know what you're doing. Can't say that about Kenny.
3. I think there is an unspoken feeling that if you're going to sack Kenny, you better have something better that speaks to your ambition and you better have it in your pocket lest you risk having all of your top targets decline. More uncertainty.
4. Many of the names we've been linked to are underwhelming in relationship to Kenny's CV and loyalty to the club
5. Casting a wide net and interviewing people may not be the best policy; knowing who you want, because you know they are what you want, projects a much more stable approach. The process is a bit of a mess already and it has not been 48 hours.
6. The choice of stability, of a KNOWN quantity, is desirable under these circumstances, hence the Rafa support, in addition to people feeling he was hard done by the cunts who got us here in the first place. Most of us want a manager who loves the club and the supporters; Rafa ticks all the boxes and he feels the most "Liverpool" of managerial candidates.
7. the fact that FSG and Ian Ayre are waffling on Rafa while holding a long list of potential targets only strengthens the impression that they don't understand the game or the club
8. The fact that FSG said they would be turning to "experts" for advice and then hiring the Director of Communications off Twitter again seems to underscore that they do not have a credible vision.
9. FSG walked in, installed Kenny and let him and Comolli spend ****loads of money on players who have underperformed. Not just one player, ALL OF THEM. yes, a few are getting better, but none have come close to justifying their price tags. If I were FSG, I would feel like I've been had, like I've been surrounding myself with the wrong people, spending money on their advice with no return, and I'd be PISSED. Of course, if I were FSG, I would have ****ing KNOWN BETTER IN THE FIRST PLACE.
10. Through no fault of his own, Roberto Martinez has managed a **** club for three years and kept them up without performing an absolute miracle and getting them in the top half. That fact alone makes many believe he is not qualified to manage our side. (I disagree, but I understand the concern). After Hodgson, no one wants to see another mid-low table manager come in and have us losing and hovering near the middle or bottom of the table.
11. Where's the new ****ing stadium everyone promises?
Look, all of this makes everyone nervous because none of us want another 5 years of ****ing agony.
This is one of the longterm problems at the club in general. Yes, the new kits are awesome, kit sponsor amazing, we are paid off of most of the debt on the club, we seem to be in better shape in many ways. BUT there is no leader and no faith that anyone in a position of power knows who to target to get us buzzing again on the pitch. If Ian Ayre is to be the Director and the voice of the team, he has a LOT to learn in my opinion. FSG asking everyone for advice and opinions seems weak and if that is the case, who can have faith they will make the right choice?
ALL OF THAT SAID....
I want them to hire AVB, get a great Director of Football with him, keep Steve Clarke, buy some players we need and let's get on with it.
The process sucks any way you look at it. I know FSG are true sportsmen and they have put in a lot of money and they want to win; Spurs and Arsenal are not above us in the table given their expenditures-- they are playing better football than us! We may not overtake Chelsea United and City on £, but we should be able to compete for CL places and who knows, get in the race for the title. FSG know this much. How do we get there? There does not seem to be a viable, easy to grab answer that everyone can get behind. FSG are not projecting competency in terms of footballing decisions. It's scary. So, I respect those who have doubts, but I do think FSG will figure it out NOW and do the right thing.
Rafa or AVB would be a good, solid start.
