To me it appears that more and more up and coming English managers and coaches have recognized that the chest thumping, 442 humping, clogger clumping methods of all no longer represent the pathway to success (I'm constantly impressed by the way Lambert and Rogers in particular express this and to a lesser extent Pardew). You'd have hoped that Carra would recognise this too.

It's a wait and see with him and you'd expect him to coach before he manages (and with that you'd expect him to coach the kiddies before the adults). His dining companion preferences aside I'm not sure we can dismiss him before hearing what he can do.

If Benitez was appointed they would fear losing control again, but they can't shirk from strong personalities. There is no point employing somebody agreeable, somebody who can fit into a management structure if they can't accommodate the creative brilliance of a man who knows what he wants.

Liverpool need to be prepared to be troubled by their manager. After all, there is no more intense and driven manager than Guardiola.

In some ways, it would be a self-destructive thankless job for Benitez. He would suffer from the high expectations from the fans who adore him and the bitter enmity from those who don't. Liverpool is not a club which observes moderation.

That is the key sentence here and I hope FSG are prepared for that. Top quality managers (or for that matter creative geniuses in any field) are often eccentric who rub a lot of people the wrong way. You cannot survive as the manager of Liverpool without having a truckload of confidence, arrogance and belief in your methods and a single minded desire to win against all odds.
It is the role of the owners to create a structure which accommodates all the eccentricities and tantrums of a creative genius, not the other way. around.

My opinion keeps changing on this, but I think I've finally decided that Martinez would be the best option. I think he ticks more boxes than AVB and I can't see Rafa returning (although I would be ecstatic if he did).

I don't see that there is a great deal of difference in terms of experience between Martinez and AVB although in my opinion Martinez has more maturity on his side. Their ages are quite important, 34 is a bit too young to manage players of a similar age.

Aside from management ability Martinez is very bright and deals with the media brilliantly. I think he looks more presentable and the owners will be looking for someone who will be the face of the brand. FSG are trying to make us more appealing to the American market and I think Martinez would fit the bill much more than AVB.

I enjoy watching Wigan play and I'd like to see us playing good football and obviously getting better results with our superior players.

Well clearly, but I have no faith in him, I have concerns about numerous aspects regarding him, including his xenophobic comments.

Of course you're quite entitled to have reservations [insert Native American joke]. I think it's possible to 'overinterpret' his comments - we don't have (anything like) the full context he made them in and things can change once he moves from the likely narrow concerns of a player to a full-time coach (or indeed, anything else).

No, nor do I, which is why I didn't rule it out.

Just saying I wouldn't 'expect' something and asked someone else why they might. I just haven't seen any evidence that he is some sort of stand out choice for assistant.
