Yeah maybe but both instances they were ousted for reasons other than performance.

I'll try and keep this succinct as possible because i think Apple and steve jobs is straying a bit far from the topic.

Steve Jobs rejoined Apple because they wanted him too. the political forces that ousted him in the first place had gone (Sculley was the CEO who got rid of him) this is not the case with Rafa. there are significant people at LFC who have political power who imo do not want to see him return.

Anyways just for the record i do agree that solely saying 'we shouldnt look back' to justify not wanting Benitezs return is just as ridiculous. however my opinion of 'not looking back' is based upon the reason that i am sick of the political management issues that have dogged the club in the past few years.

You are exactly right, but the key difference imo is that I'm not sure whether everybody at LFC would be comfortable with his return, the people that mattered at Apple when they bought NeXT and subsequently Jobs had obviously decided they were fine with it.

Dalglish was correct when he talked about everybody at the club pulling together in the same direction, that is what i believe needs to happen if the club wants to get back to the top and im not convinced it would happen that way if Rafa was re-hired.

Listened to the very good Anfield Wrap podcast today and I think one of the lads hit the nail on the head. It's been said in the thread already, but hopefully the owners are setting up a structure from top to bottom that means the manager is not as critical a part of LFC as he is now. The idea being that one man leaving does not leave the club in a shambles like we've seen over the last three years. I certainly think its true that Barca operate like this. Guardiola, albeit a good coach, really benefitted from the structure around him at Barca, from the ways they coach at all levels to the way they are run. Certainly I dont think his leaving is going to mean the downfall of Barca, and they could be as strong next year under a guy who has learned his trade in the boot room. Wasn't this the Liverpool way?? I would really favour this approach. Set it up so that we are well run at all levels by a director of football, or whoever. Then let the manager just concentrate on the tactics and the team, without having to think about all the other ****e Kenny had to deal with. The concept of the manager controlling everything doesnt work in this system of course, and if this is FSG's plan, and I would love to see it, then Rafa doesn't fit. Martinez, Rodgers, AVB would all fit with the reassurance of a DOF like Van Gaal to advise. Bring it on.

One other thing that been bugging me. The noise thats coming from chelsea about avb being a complete prick and all the players hating him is a worry. Players will not give 110% for a guy they don't like. Man-management is a big factor here. Contrast that with the Wigan players all rushing to hug Martinez when they secured their PL status and I'm starting to favour Martinez.
