Yes, Souness was a disaster, but a popular choice at the time. He was pseudo bootroom, having been a succesful captain, then succesful manager albeit in Scotland.

The rest of my post, I presume you agree with.
      Oh I don't know.

Yes Rodgers might have used some of the principles Martinez did but hes the one who has shaped that side

Remember also Rodgers finished above Martinez

I dont get how a DOF improves Martinez or cancels out his flaws

The DOF wont be picking the team/tactics that will be down to Martinez

I'd take Van Gaal but only as manager I cant see there being long lasting harmony with him in the DOF role. Hes the Craig H of the football world

Cant say I'm impressed in any way shape or form with Martinez as manager

Step backwards for me and at best its an enormous gamble

But it could turn out to be the David Moyes / Arsene Wenger type gamble

Or the Roy Hodgson, Mike Walker, Steve Bruce type gamble

I think you really have to strike gold for this to work

                What's to be upset about?

They finished 11th under Bruce, and 15th, 16th and 15th with Martinez, failiure would've been relegation, success would've been an improvement so I think a miss is fair?

Chill out, what could possibly go wrong?

Quite a simplistic way of looking at it. Look at the players Martinez has been forced to sell? He hasn't had the same freedom in the transfer market as Bruce and he's still kept them up, and playing football.

You might not feel it's a 'hit' but it's certainly not a 'miss'

What players has he been forced to sell? I can only think of Valencia?

EDIT: N'Zogbia as well I suppose.

They lost Cattermole, N'zogbia and Palacios as well, who were big players for them. If you look at the net spend between Bruce's time at the club and Martinez's - you can see he's been working under greater financial constraints.

In my opinion he's done a bloody good job at Wigan - whether he gets the Liverpool job or not.

Fair enough, it was a genuine question though, I couldn't think of anyone else

To be fair though, having read about those players. Only N'Zogbia ever played under Martinez, Palacios left before he became manager and Cattermole was sold within a couple of months.
